Rain or snow: what’s your favorite sauna weather?

Some mornings ask for nothing more than a backyard sauna and the sound of rain. Heat rises, and your head and hair take the hottest air first. A dense wool sauna hat shields your hair from that heat and protects your head, so you can stay a little longer in the quiet.

Hot head in the sauna? Look for grass in your sauna hat.

Heat rises, and on the top bench your head and hair sit in the hottest air. A dense wool sauna hat creates a natural layer between you and that heat, so you can stay in longer, in comfort.

And the grass? A blade of dry Alpine meadow means the wool was washed with water only and never chemically treated. When your pores open in the heat, only honest wool touches your head and hair.

Why is there grass in my sauna hat?

Because this wool was never washed with chemicals. It comes from Alpine mountain farms, washed with water only, undyed and unbleached. Sometimes a little of the meadow stays in the fibers. I could take it out. I’d rather not.

In the sauna, the hottest air gathers at the top, right where your hair is. A dense wool sauna hat creates a soft layer between your hair and that heat. Nothing synthetic, no dyes, just wool touching your hair at 176°F.

This undyed wool sauna hat is on its way to El Prado. The order came with one line: “for my infrared sauna outdoors in the high desert.” Under that big desert sky, a crescent moon and star felt like the right symbol.

I hand-sculpt each hat from carded, undyed Alpine wool, felted until it’s dense enough to shield your head from the heat.

The symbol is slowly sculpted into it using the same wool, not thread, so it becomes part of the hat instead of sitting on top of it. A felted loop at the crown lets it hang and dry between rounds.

Sometimes a wisp of dry meadow grass stays tucked in the fibers. I leave it there on purpose, because it’s the simplest proof that the wool is natural.

What do sauna hats actually do?

Your head heats up first, and that’s why you leave the sauna early. A wool sauna hat keeps the heat off, so you stay longer. It’s also a cold plunge hat: the wool keeps your head warm, even when wet.

The best material for a sauna hat? 100% wool. My felted wool sauna hats are hand-sculpted from dense, undyed felt, washed only with water. No dyes, no polyester. This wool felt sauna hat protects your hair, and the brim folds down over your ears, eyes and nose.

When it comes to sauna hat material, you might even find a tiny piece of dry meadow grass in the wool. That’s how natural it is.

Shaved head, burning in the sauna? This undyed wool sauna hat takes the heat instead of your head.

When someone with a shaved head asks me if it truly helps, I tell them the truth: without hair, there's nothing between your scalp and the hottest air in the room.

I sculpt every hat tall on purpose, a pocket of space above your head, instead of wool pressed flat against it. That space becomes another layer between you and the heat, and room enough for long hair, or a brim folded down over your ears.

No hair to shield it, and your scalp takes the sauna's hottest air first.

If you have a shaved or bald head, you probably know the feeling: your head is ready to leave the sauna before the rest of you is.
A dense wool hat changes that. It keeps the direct heat off your scalp, so you can stay in a little longer, in comfort.
