September is Su***de Prevention Month. During this month we try to raise awareness for su***de prevention because every life matters. Some ways to support someone who may be struggling are:
- Start a conversation. If you are concerned about someone, reach out and let them know you care. Listen without judgment and give them an opportunity to talk about what they are experiencing.
- Know the warning signs. Changes in behavior, increased isolation, hopelessness or talking about death or su***de may be signs someone needs additional support. When something feels different, trust your concern and check in.
- Connect to help. Call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org to connect with a trained crisis counselor. The 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 and can also be contacted when you are concerned about someone else.
- Strengthen connections. Supportive relationships with family, friends, schools, workplaces and communities can help people feel connected and supported.
- Support youth connection. Parents, caregivers and other trusted adults can find conversation starters, resources and practical tools to help strengthen relationships and support youth mental well-being through Parents Lead at parentslead.org.
If you or someone you know is struggling suicidal thoughts, please call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.
