An important update: “1 in 6” is now “1 in 5.”

The most recently published National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data estimate that approximately 1 in 5 U.S. children ages 3–17 had a parent-reported developmental disability diagnosis in 2023–2024. This replaces the widely cited “1 in 6” estimate published in 2019.

This update highlights the importance of listening to families, monitoring children’s development, and connecting families with screening and support when concerns arise. 💙
