I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. About why we chase things we 'think' will finally make us feel okay.

For years, I thought that if I just achieved the next thing, I'd finally feel secure.

The next goal.

The next milestone.

The next accomplishment.

Then I'd relax.

Then I'd feel confident.

Then I'd feel at peace.

The problem?

The goalpost always moved.

And the more I thought about it, the more I realized many of the women (and men) I've worked with over the years

approach weight loss the same way.

"If I could just lose ____ pounds..."

"If I could just fit into those jeans..."

"If I could just get back to my old weight..."

Then I'll feel confident.

Then I'll be happy.

Then I'll finally feel good about myself.

But what if the weight isn't the real problem?

What if the weight has simply become the place where all of our frustrations, insecurities, disappointments, and fears get projected?

I've coached long enough to know this:

The women and men who create lasting change don't just lose weight.

They learn how to stop fighting themselves.

They learn how to trust themselves again.

They learn how to stop starting over.

They learn how to build consistency without perfection.

That's what creates freedom.

Not another diet.

Not another detox.

Not another round of punishment.

Real change starts when you stop trying to fix yourself and start learning how to care for yourself.

What if your health standards were never really about health?

What if they were only about the scale? Tough pill to swallow, I know, but stick with me.

I did it for YEARS!

I did it for the pants size.
I did it for the number.

Because the moment the scale goes up a few pounds...
The moment life gets busy...
The moment you're around food, drinks, vacations, and celebrations...

The standards disappear. Trust me, I would throw them out the window!

If your standards ONLY EXIST when you're focused on the scale, they are not health standards.

Health standards are different.

โœ… They help you feel better.
โœ… Sleep better.
โœ… Have more energy.
โœ… Reduce cravings.
โœ… Improve digestion.

The scale might be part of the journey.
But it cannot be the reason for the journey. (READ THAT AGAIN)

Because if your standards are only a means to a number, you'll abandon them when the number doesn't cooperate.

But if they're a means to freedom...
To peace...
To feeling good in your body...

Now they become something worth keeping for life.

Yesterday, one of our members, Jackie, shared something that absolutely made my day. Back in November, she made a decision.

She wanted to lose weight.

Improve her health.

And avoid going on statin medication.

Fast forward 6 months...

She has lost 41 pounds.

Her triglycerides dropped from 288 to 108.

Her cholesterol improved dramatically.

And her doctor told her he was amazed by the changes.

But my favorite part wasn't the weight loss.

It wasn't the bloodwork.

It was what she shared with us in her words...

๐Ÿ”ฅ HOT TAKE: Most women don't want weight loss. They want what they believe weight loss will give them.

Confidence.

Freedom.

Peace.

Self-respect.

The problem is many women reach their goal weight and discover they still don't feel the way they thought they would.

Because confidence isn't hiding inside a number.

Neither is happiness.

Neither is self-worth.

The scale is a tool.

Not a judge.

Not a report card.

Not a measure of your value as a woman.

The women who experience lasting success learn to separate their worth from their weight.

Then they focus on the daily habits that move the needle.

Water.

Movement.

Better meals.

Consistency.

Ironically, that's often when the scale starts cooperating.

I got this message from Jenny yesterday:

"The thing that concerns me the most about summer is our weekends at our cottage, when I am very easily influenced by those around me. Mostly because I want to indulge in some cocktails, but have more than what I intended to. I haven't quite figured out the trick to enjoy a few."

I think a lot of people can relate to that AND I think it takes a lot of courage to admit that too! SO, thank you, Jenny!

The cottage.

The lake.

The beach.

The vacation.

The backyard cookout.

The concern isn't really the cocktails.

It's the feeling of losing control.

And if I'm being honest...

I don't think there's a trick.

I think people spend all summer looking for hacks when what they really need is a vision.

How do you want to feel on Sunday night?

Monday morning?

September 1st?

Because that vision will guide your decisions far better than any tip or trick.

Now... there are a few practical things that can help.

Decide before you arrive.

Not when you're already there.

Know what "enough" looks like.

Have a plan for your meals.

Drink your water.

And perhaps most importantly...

Remember that you're not there to consume.

You're there to experience.

The people.

The conversation.

The laughter.

The memories.

That's what you'll remember anyway.

Not the third cocktail.

Not the extra handful of chips.

Not the dessert.

The experience.

Most people are going to spend the next three months looking for ways to indulge without consequences.

I think there's a better question.

Jen checked in recently. Today she's down 66 pounds. Over 40 inches.

Multiple clothing sizes.

And what's interesting is that she's not even focused on losing weight anymore.

She's focused on maintenance.

Strength.

Muscle.

And living her life without constantly worrying about food.

She eats out frequently.

Travels.

Enjoys the occasional dessert.

Has a drink when she chooses.

But none of those things control her anymore.

She recently shared that she's become confident ordering what she wants, eating slowly, and stopping before she's full.

Same restaurants.

Same vacations.

Same holidays.

Same social events.

Just a very different set of skills underneath it all.

She's learned how to recognize what affects her sleep.

What affects her energy.

What affects her cravings.

What affects her body.

And instead of guessing, she now has data she can trust.

She's lifting heavier weights.

Sleeping better.

Feeling confident saying no when she wants to.

And most importantly...

She no longer feels deprived when she does.

I'm not sharing this to impress you.

I'm sharing it because the habits, systems, and skills that helped Jen lose 66 pounds are the same things we teach every day inside Better Body Life.

It's not another diet.

It's not willpower.

It's not perfection.

It's a simple system that works in the real world.
