Eight physicians officially made history on July 1, 2026, at McLaren Flint, when they began their journeys through the hospital’s new Emergency Medicine Graduate Medical Education residency program. They are the inaugural class and will always be able to say they were the first. They have begun a three-year program to master the ins and outs of emergency care. Eight more residents will join the program in July 2027, and another eight in July 2028, for a total of 24 residents rotating through the hospital for the foreseeable future. The McLaren Proton Therapy Center recently welcomed the Apex Warrior Robotics Team from Troy for an exciting STEM outreach event that brought together robotics, medical physics, and advanced cancer-treatment technology. The visit underscored McLaren’s commitment to community engagement and its dedication to inspiring future scientists, engineers, and healthcare leaders.
Proton therapy staff Joshua Konzer, Manager Proton Engineering, and Dr. Mahboob Ur Rehman, Medical Physicist, introduced the group to the principles of proton therapy and the sophisticated synchrotron system that powers patient treatments. They explained how medical physics and engineering work hand in hand to deliver precise, cutting-edge care for complex cancers.
The highlight of the visit was a guided tour of the center. Students explored the synchrotron, treatment rooms, and the gantry system, gaining firsthand insight into the robotics-based patient positioning technology that ensures accuracy and safety during treatment sessions.

We’re proud to share a historic milestone for Karmanos Cancer Institute
In FY2025, Karmanos cared for 15,754 new cancer patients, the highest number in our history, and a 47% increase from 2020. This achievement reflects years of strategic investment in expanding access to cancer care, advancing research, recruiting nationally recognized experts and bringing innovative treatments to more patients across Michigan and beyond.
While this milestone represents significant growth, it’s ultimately something much greater: ensuring more patients have access to leading-edge therapies, clinical trials and multidisciplinary care when they need it most.
Thank you to our dedicated physicians, researchers, nurses, advanced practice providers, staff, partners, and patients for making this possible. Together, we’re building the future of cancer care 💖
