Two years ago, McLaren Flint launched its Lung Nodule Program, supported by physician specialists and new technology, to help catch lung cancer at earlier stages and save more lives. The two initiatives marked a special milestone this May with the 300th Ion robotic bronchoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that allows pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons to biopsy very small, hard-to-reach lung nodules, often the earliest sign of many lung cancers.

Nearly half of Americans have either been diagnosed with a gastrointestinal condition or experience chronic symptoms. According to the American Gastroenterological Association, nearly half of those people say digestive issues disrupt their daily lives. Tweaks to your diet can be a big help.
"One fermented food or drink a day can promote your gut health and have more benefits than most probiotic supplements," said McLaren Flint clinical dietitian Elexia Sylvester. "Try yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut as they provide live bacteria, enzymes, and fiber."

For more than 25 years, students from the Genesee Intermediate School District's (GISD) Transition Center have supported retail nutritional services staff in McLaren Flint’s cafeteria. Over the past year, their assistance has expanded to the dishwashing area, food preparation, and even delivering food to the hospital’s café.
The Transition Center serves students with moderate cognitive impairments and autism spectrum disorder. The program offers classes and work skills through community partners such as McLaren Flint. Read more about how these students are making a difference at our hospital at the link below.

WHAT'S GOING AROUND?— Each week, we ask our ER providers what ailments and conditions are commonly being seen in our Emergency Room.

THIS WEEK, Dr. Erin Cuddeback, an emergency physician at McLaren Health Care, reports:

Injuries
While there has already been a steady volume of patients seeking care for orthopedic and soft tissue injuries, the holiday weekend and improved weather has increased that volume, with the majority of those receiving treatment being pediatric patients.

Asthma
The rise of allergens and other environmental irritants has caused exacerbated symptoms in some asthma sufferers.

If you have a digestive disorder or are generally low in Thiamine, a few diet tweaks will help. Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is a water-soluble vitamin.
"Foods high in thiamine include green peas, pork, black beans, and mussels, among others," said McLaren Flint clinical dietitian Elexia Sylvester. "Your body may absorb thiamine from foods better than from a vitamin. Typically, vitamins have excessive amounts of B1 that our bodies get rid of through urine."
