Dr. Daitch’s “GOOD TO KNOW”

Today, let’s cover the makeup of your back bone.

The entire spinal column consists of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. At the base are also 2 segments of bones, which are the sacrum and coccyx.

• Cervical spine: The top of the spine that consists of 7 vertebrae, primarily located in the neck (C1 - C7).

• Thoracic spine: The next 12 vertebrae are in the mid-back where the ribs are attached.

• Lumbar spine: The lower back is made up of the next 5 vertebrae (L1 - L5). While any region of the spine is susceptible to wear or injury, the lumbar area is more common due to its load-bearing position.

• Sacrum: This bone lies at the base of the spine where the hips and pelvis are attached.

• Coccyx: Referred to as the tailbone, these are 4-5 bones at the bottom of the vertebra.

Individually, the components that make up the spine are:

Vertebrae: These are the stack of bones in the back that protect the spinal column.

Discs: Between each vertebrae, these serve as shock absorbers and allow for flexibility.

Spinal cord: This tube of nerves transmits sensory and motor signals between the brain and the body.

Facet joints: Each joint is connected to a vertebrae to enable movement and stability of the spine.

Back pain that is persistent or acute should never be ignored. If you are dealing with pain in any section of the back or hips, please seek an evaluation.

LINGERING PAIN AFTER BACK SURGERY?

While our goal is to help patients avoid or delay the need for major surgery as well as eliminate or greatly minimize pain, there are cases where surgery is needed.

Recovery from major, open surgery can take weeks or months. However, there is a point where lingering pain becomes a secondary problem.

In general, spine surgery is used to treat mainly LEG PAIN or SCIATICA. However residual leg pain may persist.

This can happen when scar tissue forms and compresses on surrounding nerves. Scar tissue can restrict movement of muscles and reduce blood flow. This can cause pain that's described as stabbing, burning, or tingling.

Because scar tissue is stiff, movement causes it to tug on surrounding tissues and lead to pain months or even years later. We offer Selective Nerve Root Injections to relieve the pressure and calm resulting pain.

Many people also experience LOWER BACK PAIN after surgery due to various reasons, including lumbar joint arthritis, disc pain, vertebrogenic pain, or even lumbar instability.

Living with chronic pain for years can become the ‘norm’ for some people; an expectation of what life is just like. For people who suffer with debilitating chronic pain, however, the hope of overcoming it never subsides.

Fortunately, with modern approaches to pain management, relief from pain can occur without invasive surgery or addictive medications.

Through implantation of a new type of SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR (SCS), many people can achieve complete relief of nerve-associated pain.

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), there were 381,423 motor vehicle accidents in the state in 2024, 65% of these (246,426) resulted in injuries.

One of the most common forms of auto accidents is a rear-end collision. In these, a vehicle is hit from behind. While most of these do not result in fatalities, injuries from these crashes are often those known as whiplash.

Whiplash occurs when the neck is suddenly snapped backward and then forward, causing neck pain, stiffness and difficulty in movement. Delayed symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, and even numbness in the limbs.

Whiplash can also lead to serious injuries to the spinal cord, back, neck, bones, and brain.

Symptoms related to whiplash aren't always obvious immediately after an accident. Some take hours or several days to emerge. This is why it’s important to see a doctor soon after an accident, even minor ones. With proper treatment, whiplash is typically resolved within a few weeks or months.

Many patients with chronic low back pain have issues that date back decades. When an MRI shows degeneration in lower vertebrae, things typically go downhill from there.

People find that sitting for extended periods cause unbearable pain. Many have to give up things they enjoyed doing, even having to retire from jobs or limiting time doing simple tasks like shopping, cooking and taking walks.

Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists and Park Centers for Procedures will be offering Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP's) injections.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses a concentrated solution of the patient's own blood platelets to accelerate healing in injured joints, tendons, and muscles.

Because the treatment uses a patient’s own tissues, PRP injections are safe and can be used in combination with other procedures.
