Hoping to avoid open back surgery?

When back pain reaches the level of requiring procedural repair, hospitalized open surgery may be avoided through minimally invasive options.

What is minimally invasive surgery?
These procedures allow doctors to operate through small incisions (typically an inch or less). Through these openings, the doctor is able to insert specialized, narrow instruments that can remove offending tissues, bone, or growths. They can also place spacers that create more room between vertebrae as well as ablate selected nerves.

A minimally invasive approach means faster healing times since incisions are small. Most are performed in an hour or less in an outpatient surgery center with the patient able to return home the same day.

These procedures also cause less tissue damage, meaning the patient experiences reduced postoperative pain, scarring, and need for post-operative pain medication.

At Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists of Fort Myers, interventional pain management physician Jonathan S. Daitch, MD provides some of the region's most advanced options in minimally invasive procedures. Most are often performed while the patient relaxes in a "twilight sleep" state.

It’s not unusual for back pain to originate from more than one source. For example, when nerve compression in the spinal canal is creating pain and vertebral instability is accentuating the problem, two procedures may be advised to remedy the root cause and restore stability in the spine.

In this brief video, Dr. Jonathan S. Daitch discusses the combination of the MILD procedure and Minuteman with a patient at his 2-week follow-up appointment. Tony shares that he is already enjoying longer periods of standing and walking comfortably, feeling the limitations due to prior pain are gone.

MILD (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) relieves pressure in the spinal canal by removing excess ligament tissue. The 30-minute procedure is performed through an incision that is less than an inch.

MINUTEMAN uses an implanted device that moves the spinal canal’s walls back and upward. This creates more room, allowing the nerves to breathe. The Minuteman procedure could also improve spinal alignment and decrease low back pain.

As an interventional pain management physician, Dr. Daitch is widely recognized for his ability to restore patients to living in comfort through advanced minimally invasive procedures. These often help patients avoid the need for major open surgeries that require hospitalization and lengthy recovery times.

Dr. Daitch is also known for his ability to accurately diagnose the true source of pain, often in people who have endured pain for decades.

Dr. Daitch's "GOOD TO KNOW"

When should you see a doctor for low back pain?

In one’s lifetime, the lower back endures much on just 5 vertebrae. Since it connects to the pelvis, the low back endures the body’s twisting and turning along with supporting the weight of the upper body.

With the daily wear and tear along with conditions like arthritis or osteoporosis, it’s easy to see why low back pain affects so many adults.

Lower back pain that persists for more than 2 - 4 weeks should be seen by a physician. During this period, try alternating heat and ice packs (20 minutes per time) several times during the day. Take OTC inflammatory medications as directed on the package. Do mild stretching and maintain proper posture.

However, see a doctor immediately when pain increases in intensity or causes numbness or tingling in the groin area, loss of bladder control, or weakness in the extremities.

For many individuals, persistent low back pain can be relieved through simple injections. More severe problems may respond well to minimally invasive procedures

that can provide long term or lasting relief. When surgery is your best course of action, we can make a referral for you, if desired.

At Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists, our board certified pain medicine physicians are known for helping to relieve low back pain without the need for open surgery.

What is the difference between an interventional pain management physician and a general pain medicine physician?

Both specialties are typically board-certified (anesthesiology, physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurology). However, an interventional pain management specialist completes additional fellowship training to seek out the root cause of pain.

“Interventional” techniques are often minimally invasive (such as radiofrequency ablation, joint injections, or nerve stimulators or nerve blocks). These are intended to help the patient be less dependent on medication therapy, often achieving long term or lasting pain relief.

As one patient shared:
“He’s been able to take care of my problems without narcotics, and I really like that.”
Bruce, Patient of Dr. Jonathan Daitch

I established Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists in 2001, solely founded to provide pain relief and restore patients to comfort and mobility. Over the years, we've seen the pain management field make miraculous strides in helping patients to avoid or greatly delay open surgery while enjoying a desirable quality of life.

Our entire team takes great pride in decades of patients who are able to live full lives. If you (or someone you know) would like to discuss how we may be able to help you (even pain that has existed for decades), call 239-437-8000 to schedule an appointment.
