When fall arrives, cooler temperatures and colorful leaves make yard work feel almost therapeutic. But spending an afternoon raking leaves can put more stress on your shoulders than you might expect.

Raking involves repeated pulling, reaching, lifting, twisting, and carrying. If you already have shoulder stiffness, weakness, rotator cuff irritation, or poor movement mechanics, several hours of repetitive yard work can make your symptoms worse.

5 Everyday Habits That Could Be Making Your Shoulder Pain Worse

Shoulder pain does not always come from one obvious injury. Sometimes, the habits you repeat every day can keep irritating an already sensitive shoulder.

You might spend hours at a computer, sleep with your arm in an uncomfortable position, repeatedly reach overhead, carry heavy objects on one side, or continue doing an activity even though it hurts. Individually, these habits may seem harmless. Repeated over time, however, they can contribute to increased stress on the shoulder.

The right shoes can make a real difference in how steady you feel on your feet.

Look for:

👉 A low, wide heel instead of high or narrow
👉 A snug fit that doesn't slide around
👉 Non-slip soles with good tread
👉 Support around the ankle, not just cushioning

Worn-out treads or shoes that are too loose can quietly work against your balance every day.

What kind of shoes do you wear most often around the house?

Have you ever walked into a busy grocery store and suddenly felt dizzy, off-balance, or uncomfortable?

Maybe the aisles seem to move around you. Perhaps you feel like you're being pulled to one side. You may feel unsteady while turning your head to look at products, walking past other shoppers, or moving down an aisle with shelves filled with colorful labels.

For some people, this feeling is more than simply being overwhelmed by a crowded store.

Most people don't think about how fast they walk.

You get up, take a few steps, walk across a room, climb a staircase, or head to the grocery store without giving much thought to your pace. But your walking speed can actually provide valuable information about how well several systems in your body are working together.

Walking is something most people do without thinking about it. Every step involves coordination between your brain, muscles, joints, nerves, eyes, inner ear, and feet. When one or more of these systems is affected, the way you walk can change.

Balance Exercises: How Do They Actually Train Your Brain?

When most people think about balance exercises, they imagine standing on one foot, walking heel-to-toe, or standing on a foam pad.

But balance is much more complicated than simply having "strong legs."

Every time you stand, walk, turn, reach, step over an obstacle, or recover from a stumble, your brain is processing information from several different systems and coordinating an appropriate response.

Do you avoid:

🚫 Stairs
🚫 Walking on grass
🚫 Going to crowded places
🚫 Getting up at night
🚫 Walking without holding onto something
🚫 Going places by yourself?

You may think you're simply "being careful," but these behaviors can be signs that your balance or confidence with movement needs attention.

Physical therapy can help identify what's contributing to your balance difficulties and work on strength, coordination, mobility, and walking mechanics.

Don't let fear of falling determine where you go or what you do.

September is a great time to check in on your balance.

Try this simple challenge:

👉 Stand near a sturdy surface for safety.
👉 Lift one foot off the floor.
👉 See how long you can comfortably maintain your balance.

If you notice significant wobbling, need to put your foot down quickly, or feel unsure standing on one leg, it may be worth having your balance evaluated.

How many seconds can you stand on one foot?

The way you walk can reveal a lot about how your body is moving.

Changes in:

• Step length
• Walking speed
• Foot placement
• Arm swing
• Balance
• Turning
• Coordination

can sometimes indicate weakness, mobility limitations, pain, or problems with coordination.

A physical therapist can assess your gait and determine what may be contributing to changes in the way you walk.

Have you noticed your walking pattern changing over time?
