"In 1963, 18-year-old Peter Roberts was working as a clerk at a Sears store in Massachusetts when he began experimenting with a better socket wrench. He eventually developed a quick-release mechanism that allowed users to remove and replace sockets with one hand. Roberts built a prototype and submitted his idea to Sears, which sold more than a million wrenches a year.

Sears told Roberts that the invention had limited potential and eventually obtained his patent rights for payments totaling $10,000. But the company knew more than Roberts realized. Court records later showed that Sears expected strong sales and began producing about 44,000 quick-release wrenches per week shortly after the agreement. From 1965 through 1976, Sears earned more than $44 million in incremental profit from wrenches using Roberts' quick-release feature.

Roberts eventually took Sears to court, arguing that the company had misled him about the value of his invention. A federal jury found Sears liable for fraud and other claims and awarded Roberts $1 million. The legal fight continued for years through multiple trials and appeals, eventually becoming a decades-long dispute over the invention and its profits.

"Before L. Ron Hubbard became famous as the founder of Scientology, he was married to his first wife, Margaret “Polly” Grubb. The couple married in 1933 and had two children. During the marriage, Hubbard often traveled to New York for his writing career, and Polly reportedly began to suspect that he was seeing other women.

According to an account given by family friend Robert MacDonald Ford and later included in Russell Miller’s biography Bare-Faced Messiah, Polly eventually found two letters Hubbard had written to two different women in New York. Rather than confronting him immediately, she opened the envelopes, switched the letters so each woman would receive the one intended for the other, sealed them again, and returned them to the outgoing mail. She waited until the letters had been collected before telling Hubbard what she had done.

The prank apparently caused quite an argument. Friends recalled seeing the couple arrive separately at a gathering at the Bremerton Yacht Club while refusing to speak to each other. The following morning, Hubbard reportedly packed a bag and took a train to New York. Despite the episode, the couple remained together for several more years before their marriage eventually ended.

"In February 2017, a family of four was asleep in their home in Clairmont, Alberta, Canada, when a fire broke out during the night. At around 3:30 a.m., the family cat apparently noticed something was wrong and made its way into the parents' bedroom. Instead of simply meowing, the cat bit the mother on the arm hard enough to wake her.

Once awake, the mother realized there was a fire and alerted the rest of the family. The parents and their two children were able to get outside safely and call for help. Fire crews arrived and contained the fire, which had started underneath the mobile home. No one in the family was injured. Firefighters also rescued a second cat that was still inside.

County of Grande Prairie Fire Chief Trevor Grant confirmed that the cat deserved credit for alerting the sleeping family. He said the cat woke them with enough time to escape and that the outcome could have been very different otherwise. A photo of a firefighter carrying one of the cats from the scene later spread online, where people fittingly called the animal a ""hero kitty.""

"In 1816, after the War of 1812, the United States began building a large fort at Rouses Point, New York, near Lake Champlain. The location was important because British forces had previously used the Lake Champlain route to invade from Canada. The new fort was meant to prevent that from happening again.

There was just one problem. A new survey showed that the old border markers were inaccurate. The true 45th parallel was about three-quarters of a mile farther south, meaning the Americans had been building their fort on Canadian territory. Construction stopped, and the unfinished fort became popularly known as “Fort Blunder.” Much of its stone was later taken by local residents and reused in nearby buildings.

The situation was finally settled with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which placed the site on the American side of the border. Two years later, the U.S. began building a much larger fort there called Fort Montgomery. The ruins seen at the site today are mainly from this later fort, not the original Fort Blunder.

"In 2008, Army National Guard Capt. Michael Clauer was deployed to Iraq when his family’s home in Frisco, Texas, was foreclosed on by their homeowners association. The house was worth more than $300,000 and had no mortgage, but the family had fallen behind on HOA dues. Reports put the original unpaid amount at roughly $800 to $977.

The HOA sent several notices, but they went unanswered. While Clauer was overseas, the home was sold at a foreclosure auction for just $3,201. It was later resold to another buyer for $135,000. Clauer’s family continued living there while they fought the foreclosure in federal court.

In 2010, the legal battle ended with a settlement that returned ownership of the house to the Clauer family. Details of the agreement remained confidential, but the case drew national attention and renewed debate in Texas over how much power homeowners associations should have to foreclose over unpaid dues.

"On September 15, 1896, more than 40,000 people gathered near Waco, Texas, for an unusual publicity stunt organized by the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. Railroad agent William George Crush arranged for two old steam locomotives to race toward each other and collide head-on. The temporary site was even named “Crush” after him.

The railroad expected the collision to be spectacular but believed the locomotives’ boilers would withstand the impact. Instead, both boilers burst moments after the trains collided, throwing pieces of metal toward the huge crowd. Several spectators were seriously injured, including photographer Jarvis Deane, who lost an eye. Three people reportedly lost their lives, although historical sources differ on the exact number.

Despite the disaster, the event became one of the most famous publicity stunts in Texas history. It even inspired composer Scott Joplin to write a piece called “The Great Crush Collision March.”

"In 2012, John and Frances Canning were preparing to get married at Manchester Town Hall when they learned that Queen Elizabeth II would be visiting the building on the same day as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour. John decided to send Buckingham Palace a lighthearted invitation to their wedding, even though the couple never expected her to actually attend.

They received a polite reply from the Palace thanking them for the invitation, but indicating that the Queen would be too busy. The couple went ahead with their wedding as planned. What they did not know was that arrangements had quietly been made for the Queen and Prince Philip to meet them.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds were asked to wait inside the Town Hall. Moments later, Queen Elizabeth II appeared and personally congratulated them. She greeted the couple by their first names, told Frances she looked lovely, and posed for photographs with them. Prince Philip also chatted with John about their honeymoon plans.
