When severe injuries happen, every minute — and every unit of blood — matters.

A trauma surgeon explained how access to blood can play a critical role in trauma care, particularly during the first hour after a serious injury.

One important benefit for our community is a growing regional effort to make whole blood available to emergency medical teams. This allows paramedics to give potentially life-saving blood transfusions to severely injured or bleeding patients before they reach the hospital.

As Central Texas grows, so does the need for donated blood. From January through July 2026, the region’s need for red blood cells increased 1.6% compared with the same period in 2025, according to We Are Blood.

We’re grateful for the blood donors, first responders and trauma care teams who work together to help patients when seconds count.
