A simple misstep can lead to a serious injury. As cooler fall weather brings more outdoor activities and household projects, taking a few precautions can help reduce your risk of falling. 🍂

Peyton Williams, trauma and injury prevention coordinator at St. David's Georgetown Hospital, recently shared these fall prevention tips:

👟 Wear sturdy shoes with good traction.
đź’ˇ Keep walkways well-lit and clear of tripping hazards.
🚶 Stay aware of uneven surfaces and your surroundings.
đź’Ş Stay active to help maintain strength and balance.

Falls can happen at any age. Taking small steps to prevent them can make a big difference in keeping you safe this fall.

💓 Does your heart ever feel like it’s pounding, racing, fluttering or skipping a beat? These sensations can be signs of heart palpitations.

Heart palpitations are common, but some may need medical attention. Seek medical care if palpitations keep coming back or occur with symptoms of chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness or shortness of breath.

Triggers can be different for everyone. Stress, caffeine, poor sleep, dehydration, certain medications and other factors may play a role.

❤️ Have you ever felt your heart racing, fluttering or beating out of rhythm? It could be a sign of atrial fibrillation, or AFib — the most common type of heart rhythm disorder. According to the American Heart Association, AFib affects approximately 5 million Americans.

AFib can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other serious health concerns if left untreated. The good news: treatment is available, and finding AFib early can help you protect your long-term heart health.

If you’re noticing symptoms, talk to your doctor or schedule an appointment with one of our heart experts: https://bit.ly/3TZEvo4

Starting a fitness routine after 50 doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to start gradually and choose movement you can sustain.

A balanced routine can include:
• Cardiovascular activity, such as walking or swimming
• Strength training with bodyweight exercises, resistance bands or light weights
• Balance and flexibility exercises, such as stretching, yoga or tai chi

You don’t need a gym to get moving. Short walks, chair squats, wall pushups or a few minutes of stretching at home can all help you build a consistent routine.

Pay attention to how your body feels. If you experience sharp pain, dizziness or joint discomfort, stop and adjust your activity. If you have a medical condition, talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Small steps can support strength, mobility and independence over time.

Texas heat is more than uncomfortable — it can put serious stress on your body.

Staying ahead of heat-related illness starts with recognizing the warning signs. Headache, unusual fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps and nausea can be signs your body is struggling with the heat.

Physicians recommend making hydration part of your routine instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. When spending time outside, take breaks from the heat and pay attention to how you feel.

Heat can affect anyone, and older adults, young children and people with certain health conditions may have a harder time tolerating prolonged high temperatures.
