Did you know Kitsap county has a brain injury support group that meets both in-person and online? Kitsap Brain Injury hosts weekly "TBI Klatch" meetings on Zoom, as well as monthly in-person support groups on the second Thursday of the month. The next monthly meeting will be on September 10th. The core word of the week is "what"!
"Core words" are a small set of words that make up most of what we actually say on a daily basis. These vocabulary words are very important for early language development. Parents and therapists can support their children's core vocabulary by modeling core words in different contexts and creating opportunities for the child to use the word.
Opportunities to model "stop" include:
-Describing details about an item during play: "What color is this one?"
-Noting surprising sounds, sights, etc.: "Wow, what was that?"
-Asking for item labels: "What is this?"

This word is relevant all throughout our day, in ways we might not even think about. There are many simple ways to expose your child to the word and facilitate saying it on their own -- easily 50-100 times in a day!
Ask your child's therapist for more ideas on modeling core words to support your child's language development.

Feeding therapy can get messy — and for good reason!

We can learn a lot by playing with new foods: texture, smell, taste, temperature, and more. When we allow babies and kids to explore foods without pressure to do it the “right” way, they may be more comfortable and motivated to try.

Adding color to yogurt and using it to paint suddenly feels fun, not scary!
