💜 YOUR CHILD MAY BE HURTING IN SILENCE. Do you know the signs?
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), including cutting, is when a young person intentionally hurts themselves without intending to end their life. It can be a sign of emotional distress and difficulty coping with overwhelming feelings. They may be struggling with emotions they don't yet know how to express.
🔎 1. RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS
Unexplained cuts or scars, frequent bandages, withdrawing from loved ones, or wearing clothing to conceal injuries may be signs that a young person needs support.
💜 2. RESPOND WITH COMPASSION
Stay calm. Listen without judgment. Avoid blame, punishment, or shame. Gently ask how they are feeling and let them know they are not alone.
🤝 3. CONNECT THEM TO HELP
Reach out to a qualified mental health professional. Self-injury does not always mean someone intends to die, but it should always be taken seriously. Ask directly about suicidal thoughts when concerned, and seek urgent help if there is immediate danger.
Parents, teachers, and community members: Your response matters. A compassionate conversation can help a young person feel safe enough to ask for help.
💬 Start the conversation today. Check in with a young person you care about. Listen, show compassion, and help them connect with support.
