His love for photography also extends to collecting vintage cameras. Each camera in his collection at Atria Newport Beach represents a different chapter in the history of photography, from classic film cameras to the technology we use today.

Meet Ozzy – and his human, Jefrrel – a four-legged member of the Atria San Juan family!

As Resident Services Director, Jefrrel oversees the community’s care departments and is especially passionate about working with residents living with dementia. She says she finds joy in understanding what they’re experiencing and helping them through both the challenges and the moments of joy.

And she has Ozzy, who helps her do just that.

The three-year-old Australian shepherd and trained service dog comes to work with Jeffrel and has quickly become a familiar face around the community. When residents see him, Jeffrel says, “They just brighten up.”

Ozzy can be especially helpful when a resident is having a difficult day. Jefrrel has seen how spending time with him can shift a resident’s mood and help them move toward something positive. He also brings plenty of joy to the team – and even the community’s visiting physician makes a point of seeing Ozzy on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“I love that he brings joy not just to the residents but also to the team,” Jefrrel says.

For Jefrrel, caring for residents is about understanding the person behind the challenges and finding opportunities for connection. Sometimes, that connection has four legs and a wagging tail. 🐾

At Atria Park of Vintage Hills, Marsha's apartment is a testament to her SoCal lifestyle.

Marsha, an accomplished swimmer, and her late husband, Jerry, both grew up in La Jolla, where Jerry loved surfing, fishing, sailing and diving.

"He was a Seabee in the Navy and served in Vietnam," Marsha shares. He courageously rescued four Marines from drowning while surfing. "It earned him consideration for a Purple Heart."

Marsha keeps his surfboard proudly displayed in her apartment – a reminder of their life together and the adventures they shared.

Now, Marsha is creating new memories of her own at Atria Park of Vintage Hills in the sunshine of Temecula.

Residents in assisted living enjoyed a lively game of Mahjong, putting their skills and strategies into play while learning from one another and sharing plenty of smiles along the way.

For residents in our Bridges program, we adapted Mahjong into a simpler, engaging experience centered on matching colors and symbols and recognizing patterns. This modified version encouraged focus, hand-eye coordination, social connection, and, most importantly, the joy of participating together.

From the farm to our kitchen! What a sweet way to continue the fun from our Goebbert's Farm outing. After a wonderful fall day there, we brought back fresh apples and delicious apple butter, then turned our finds into something extra special during Kitchen Chronicles, where we made baked apple roses!

Residents sliced, rolled, sprinkled, baked, and, of course, tasted their beautiful creations. The aroma of warm apples and cinnamon filled the room while everyone shared smiles, stories, and plenty of laughter.

From picking up fall favorites at the farm to creating together in our kitchen, the memories just kept growing! 🍎

Things got a little saucy at Atria Briarcliff Manor – pasta sauce, that is! Residents joined Chef Leah and her family for a hands-on lesson in making and jarring homemade pesto and red sauce. Each resident walked away with a jar of their own!

"I have to give a shout-out to all the residents," says Sous Chef Maria. "They did an amazing job making tomato sauce with Chef Leah."

What a beautiful day to celebrate the season at Goebbert's Farm! Residents enjoyed a wonderful outing surrounded by pumpkins, crisp autumn air, and all the colors of fall.

We're excited to introduce our Monthly Resident Checklist, a playful way to encourage residents to take part in meaningful activities throughout the month. From enjoying a favorite treat and spending time outdoors to doing a puzzle, attending Resident Council, playing bingo, stretching, reading, and joining in seasonal activities, there's something for everyone! Residents are encouraged to check off as many items as they can. It's not about completing everything. It's about participating, connecting, and enjoying the moments along the way.

Our September checklist was a wonderful success, and we're thrilled to celebrate the two residents who completed the challenge and are now our Resident Spotlights of the Month!

Apollo, the monarch butterfly, took flight! 🧡🦋

The residents at Atria Center City raised Apollo from a tiny egg on a milkweed plant, watching as he went through the incredible journey: first into a hungry caterpillar, then a chrysalis and finally a beautiful butterfly.

Residents gathered around to say goodbye to Apollo as he was released into the wild.

We served it up Southern style at our Taste of the Carolinas events.

We enjoyed BBQ brisket served with collard greens, mac and cheese and corn bread. And don’t forget about dessert – we had classic blackberry cobbler!

To top it off, we watched the sweet Southern classic, The Notebook!

We can't wait to see – and taste – the cuisine from our destination next month!

“Engage Life means finding joy," says Sarah, an Engage Life Program Instructor at Atria Newport Beach. "It means making time for our residents who make me smile, even on hard days. It means being present and appreciating the moments I get to share with them. Getting to make those memories with them at this moment in life.”
Sarah was recently recognized as Employee of the Month, and it's easy to see why. Her passion and attention to residents' needs have made her indispensable to her team.

She shares that working in senior living has taught her an important life lesson: to slow down.

"It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of daily life and work. But when a resident calls you over and asks you to sit for a minute, everything shifts." Those little pauses help her refocus and remember the purpose behind what she does every day.

Sarah, thank you for reminding us that Engage Life isn’t just about what we plan or the places we go. It’s about being present, slowing down, laughing together and finding joy in the people right in front of us.

Bikers may seem tough, but have you ever met a biker’s grandma? 🏍️💪

Atria San Juan showed off its wild side with a visit from the Lifestyle Cycles Riding Group and Black Sheep Motorcycle Ministry For Christ. Red bandanas, tattoo sleeves, live music, BBQ and plenty of laughter brought a little biker flair to the community – proving that adventure and a love of good times never go out of style! 🤘
