MYTHBUSTER MONDAYS:
Arthritis cannot be improved with physical therapy!

FACT: Physical therapy can help reduce arthritis pain, improve mobility, and make everyday activities easier.

Here’s how physical therapy can help:
• Strengthen muscles to better support your joints.
• Improve flexibility and mobility to make movement easier.
• Build balance and stability to help you move with confidence.
• Stay active with exercises tailored to your needs.

Regular, appropriate exercise can help manage arthritis symptoms and improve your quality of life. While physical therapy cannot reverse joint damage, it can help you move more comfortably and maintain your independence.

Arthritis doesn’t mean you have to stop moving! Find the right exercises and take the first step toward moving better and feeling stronger.

Static vs. Dynamic Stretching: What’s the Difference? 🤸‍♀️

🔹 Static stretching involves holding a stretch in one position. It can help improve flexibility over time and is often best suited for after a workout or as part of a cool-down.
🔹 Dynamic stretching involves controlled movement through a range of motion. It helps increase blood flow, improve mobility, and prepare your muscles and joints for physical activity or a workout.

The key is knowing when to use each type of stretching. Dynamic stretching is generally a great choice for preparing your body for movement, while static stretching can be beneficial when you’re working on flexibility and winding down after activity.

Save this post for your next workout and remember: there’s a specific time and place for static vs. dynamic stretching! 💪

MYTHBUSTER MONDAYS:
Rest is (NOT) always best for lower back pain.

When your lower back hurts, resting may feel like the natural thing to do—but complete rest isn’t always the best approach.

For acute low back pain, some movement is often better than prolonged rest. Gentle activity within your tolerance can help reduce stiffness, maintain mobility, and support improvements in pain and function.

That doesn’t mean you should push through severe pain or ignore your body. Start with comfortable, gentle movements and gradually increase activity as you’re able. Even small amounts of movement throughout the day can be better than staying in bed or remaining inactive for long periods.

Your body doesn’t necessarily need more rest—it may need the right amount of movement.

October is National Physical Therapy Month!

October is a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and students who are dedicated to helping people move better and live healthier lives.

This month also provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the many ways physical therapy can help people stay active, independent, and engaged in the activities they love.

We are proud to recognize the PTs, PTAs, and students who make a difference in the lives of their patients every day through their knowledge, compassion, dedication, and commitment to movement and quality of life. 💪

Happy National Physical Therapy Month! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Dry Needling ≠ Acupuncture

Think dry needling and acupuncture are the same? Not quite!

While both use thin needles, they differ in their purpose, approach, and clinical framework.

🔹 Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and traditionally focuses on specific acupuncture points and concepts such as energy flow through meridians.
🔹 Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to address musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. Needles are typically inserted into targeted muscles and other tissues, often focusing on areas of muscle tightness or trigger points.

Dry needling can be used to help:
• Reduce muscle pain and tightness
• Improve range of motion
• Address trigger points and muscle dysfunction
• Improve movement and function
• Complement exercise, manual therapy, and other PT interventions

At Proformance Therapy, we offer Dry Needling as part of our comprehensive physical therapy services. Have questions about whether Dry Needling may be appropriate for you? Talk with your physical therapist!

MYTHBUSTER MONDAYS:
Think you need a doctor's referral before starting physical therapy? Think again! 💪

In Illinois, patients can generally see a licensed physical therapist without a doctor's referral. Whether you’re dealing with pain, recovering from an injury, or simply want to improve your strength, mobility, or performance, a PT can evaluate your condition and determine whether physical therapy is appropriate.

Your insurance may also cover the patient-initiated visit. While Illinois law allows direct access to physical therapy, insurance coverage depends on your specific health plan. It’s worth while verifying benefits with your insurance provider prior to seeking physical therapy services.

Don't let the referral process stand in the way of taking care of your health! At Proformance Therapy, we're here to help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing what you love. 🏋️‍♀️

🔥❄️ Heat or Ice—which one should you use?

Both heat and ice can be beneficial when recovering from an injury, but they serve different purposes and are typically used at different stages of the recovery process.

🔥 Heat can help relax tight muscles, increase blood flow, and reduce pain. It is generally more helpful after the initial inflammatory stage of an injury has settled.

❄️ Ice can help calm irritated or damaged tissue, reduce swelling, and manage pain—making it especially useful immediately after an injury or when symptoms flare up.

The key is knowing when and how to use each safely. Always protect your skin, limit application time, and allow your body time between applications.

If you’re unsure whether heat or ice is right for your injury, a physical therapist can help determine the best approach for your specific condition.

MYTHBUSTER MONDAYS:
Your MRI doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Why You Don’t Always Need an MRI:
• Clinical context matters most: Doctors diagnose you by combining your physical exam, symptoms, and medical history, not just a scan.
• Scans can show false alarms: Many healthy people have tears or degenerative changes on an MRI without feeling any pain.
• Not all issues show up: Conditions like concussions or balance problems are functional issues that often do not appear on standard structural images like an MRI.

Instead of focusing solely on what appears on an MRI, it can be beneficial to work with a movement specialist, such as a physical therapist, who can assess the bigger picture.

Your physical therapist can address the total factors contributing to your pain and help you move better, feel better, and get back to doing what you love.

Don’t just treat the image. Treat the person.
