Diabetes affects thousands of families across Wayne County, but prevention and early detection can make a life-changing difference.

Through UNC Health Wayne’s Diabetes HealthCheck program, community members have access to free diabetes screenings, education, support groups, and resources designed to help identify risk factors and prevent the progression of type 2 diabetes. The program brings these services directly into the community, making it easier for people to take charge of their health.

This important work is made possible through the generosity of donors who believe in creating a healthier future for Wayne County. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Fran Boyce for her support of the Diabetes HealthCheck program. Her commitment helps ensure that more individuals and families have access to the education, screenings, and resources they need to live healthier lives.

Together, we’re helping build a stronger, healthier Wayne County—one screening, one conversation, and one life at a time.

A stroke doesn’t wait. Neither do we.

From the moment EMS calls a Code Stroke, our nationally recognized stroke team at UNC Health Wayne is already moving — preparing the ER, activating imaging, coordinating specialists, and racing against time to protect brain function and save lives.

Every second matters. Every decision matters. Every teammate matters.

This stroke drill highlights the speed, precision, and teamwork required when someone is experiencing a stroke, because fast treatment can make all the difference in recovery.

Recognize the signs. Call 911 immediately. And know that when minutes matter most, our stroke team is ready.

May is Stroke Awareness Month, and we’re sharing an important message from our Stroke and Chest Pain Coordinator, Carrie Stokes, about recognizing the signs of a stroke and why every second matters. 🧠

Remember B.E.F.A.S.T.:
🔹 Balance – sudden loss of balance or coordination
🔹 Eyes – sudden vision changes
🔹 Face – facial drooping
🔹 Arms & Legs – weakness on one side
🔹 Speech – trouble speaking
🔹 Time – call 911 immediately

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait. Fast action can improve recovery, protect brain function, and save lives.
At UNC Health Wayne, our nationally recognized stroke team is ready to provide the quality care you deserve — close to home.
