Swami Sivananda’s teachings are the inspiration behind the teachings of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. Our founder, Swami Vishnudevananda, was one of Swami Sivananda’s close disciples, and was sent the the West by his teacher in 1957 to spread the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta. Swami Vishnudevananda, known as “Swamiji” established this organization in his Master’s name. The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm is a branch of the international organization.

Ayurveda is the oldest known medical system. It is the Mother of all healing systems. It is a five thousand year old Vedic Science of life, (Ayur= life, Veda= knowledge, science). Ayurveda is the traditional healing system of India and the medical side of the yogic science.

It includes all methods of healing from diet, herbs, exercise and life style regiments to yogic practices and meditation. With its unique understanding of individual constitution, Ayurveda provides the insight for each person and each culture to create a way of life in harmony with nature and one’s higher Self.

As Yoga is the science of spiritual development aiming at Self-realization, so is Ayurveda the science of proper living aiming to establish perfect health in body and mind.

Yoga and meditation are the most effective methods to recharge the body and mind and relieve the tension and stress of modern life. Take time to slow down, enjoy nature and reconnect to a wholesome way of life, re-inspire with new thoughts and perspectives, uplift your spirit with daily chanting, and apply techniques to increase your awareness and joy.

Come for a Yoga vacation of a few days or weeks and gradually walk the path towards the deeper aspects of Yoga – from improving fitness and relaxing to maintaining health, calming the mind, and even becoming a counselor and Yoga teacher for others.

In order for you to step back, you are afraid, which is why you attach. Why are we so attached? Because we are afraid. We are afraid that if we detach we will let go of that holding and then we will fall into the nothingness. Then we would lose ourselves. That’s a problem. That is why in order for you to learn to detach you must be very anchored and you have to remember your true nature which is Satchitananda Atman. The moment you remember yourself, you remember that if you are attached you lose yourself, but if you are detached you remember yourself.

Now you need to remember the self as Satchitananada. Sat means always existing. You in reality are always existing – not coming, not going, not changing, not being born, not dying. That means beyond this life in this body you have an existence, something that is always there: your spirit, your soul. You need to remember the truth that is untouched and is always there behind the whole drama – when you remember, you are not afraid. People are afraid of dying and afraid things will change. You have to practice to withdraw so you can remember the self that is not changing.

#6 Serving God or the Self in All

Do unto others what you would like to have done to yourself.

Love thy neighbor as thyself. Adapt, adjust, accommodate. Bear insult, bear injury. Unity in diversity.

We are all parts of the same body. Practice humility in action. Beware of power, fame, name, praise, and censure.

Mind functions with names and forms; the mind itself is limited as it only functions along with words and images. This is why we use words or images to focus on; we understand that words and images are the limited way to express the reality that is beyond the grasp of the mind. This world as we know it is just the world of names and forms, and there is another reality beyond it. That reality can be experienced only when we go beyond the mind.

Self-realization is not the result of accumulating more concepts, philosophies, or intellectual understanding. The intellect can point toward the Truth, remove doubts, and discriminate between the real and the unreal, but it cannot itself grasp the Infinite. The Self is ever-present and self-luminous, yet it remains veiled by the constant activity of the mind. When thoughts subside, desires become quiet, and the waves of the mind come to rest, the underlying Reality reveals itself naturally. Just as the sun is reflected clearly only in a still lake, the light of the Self is experienced when the mind becomes perfectly calm. Therefore, Self-realization is attained not by thinking more, but by transcending thought and abiding in the silence of one's true nature.

Description
Life is love and love is life, according to Swami Sivananda. Life is poetry and relationships. Nourish the right brain and discover your creative self. Relax in your fulfilled divine nature.

Most people exhaust themselves by over-thinking. They suffer and forget their heart. Be nice. Be yourself. Learn to give comfort to others by your loving presence. Learn the art of listening, the art of remembering divinity in people around you. Get out of your self-asserting nature. Learn self-surrender. Soften yourself and sweeten your life through kirtan and community. Open yourself to the miracle of living. Marvel at the richness of your own heart. Serve, love, give. Cultivate joy and acceptance. Sing. See divinity in your Self and others. Enjoy the gift of nature; see nature as the Divine Mother.

“Smile with the flowers and the green grass. Play with the butterflies, birds and deer. Shake hands with the shrubs, ferns and twigs of trees. Talk to the rainbow, wind, stars and sun. Converse with the running brooks and the waves of the sea. Speak with the walking stick. Develop friendship with all your neighbors, dogs, cats, cows, human beings, trees, flowers, etc. Then you will have a wide, perfect, rich, full life. You will realize oneness of life.” —Swami Sivananda

5 States of Concentration
Through concentration, the mind moves through stages, and with the stages, develops more peace and happiness.

There are five states of concentration:
dull state – there is unhappiness and depression
scattered state of mind – there is unhappiness and restlessness
gathered state of mind- the mind is more calm and productive
one pointed state of mind- the mind is nearly in a meditative state
and finally total absorption of the mind- the mind loses itself

The main contribution of Raja Yoga is the knowledge of the mind and how to harness the powers of the mind for higher purpose. Yoga Psychology is the knowledge of the mind in order to transcend the mind.
