Thinking about wearing your contact lenses for a dip in the pool or ocean this summer? ๐โโ๏ธ๐
We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but water and contacts are a dangerous mix. Here is why:
๐งฝ LENSES ARE LIKE SPONGES: Soft contact lenses are highly porous. When you swim, they absorb the water around them, trapping bacteria, pool chemicals, and parasites directly against the surface of your eye.
๐ฆ CHLORINE DOESNโT KILL EVERYTHING: While pool chlorine does a great job, it doesn't kill everything instantly. A microscopic organism called Acanthamoeba loves fresh and pool water. If it gets trapped under your lens, it can cause severe, sight-threatening infections.
The good news? You don't have to swim blindly! Here are 3 safe ways to see clearly this summer:
1๏ธโฃ Prescription Goggles: The gold standard! They keep water out completely while keeping your vision 20/20.
2๏ธโฃ Dailies + Goggles: If you must wear contacts, wear daily disposables under tight-fitting goggles, and THROW THE LENSES AWAY immediately after your swim.
3๏ธโฃ Go Lens-Free: If your prescription allows, leave the lenses in your case until you're dried off.
