Teresa Marietta Jones, 70, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, May 25, at the University of Kentucky Hospital.
Born on February 27, 1956, in Hazard, Kentucky, Teresa was the cherished daughter of Huey and Betty Jones. She was a proud graduate of Hazard High School and later earned her teaching degree from Eastern Kentucky University.

Known affectionately as "Tres" and "Teeta," she possessed a quick wit, sharp mind, and remarkable sense of humor. She was unwavering in her devotion to her family and fiercely protective of those she loved. Even during her final days, she remained insightful, perceptive, and always ready with a clever comeback that left a room in laughter.

Athletics played an important role throughout her life. Teresa was a member of the very first Hazard High School girls basketball team formed under Coach Quillen Sr. following the passage of Title IX, helping blaze a trail for future generations of female athletes. Every summer you could find her on a softball field, where her competitive spirit was legendary. For Teresa, it was "first place or nothing," and she was known to throw a second-place trophy out the window.

She remained active in athletics throughout her career, coaching girls basketball and softball and later serving as an assistant basketball coach at St. Catherine's College. A fierce competitor who expected the best from herself and those around her, Teresa helped lead her teams to numerous championships and took great pride in their success both on and off the field.

Though she made her home in Lexington, Teresa's heart never strayed far from the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. She loved the mountains, mountain people, and the small-town mountain life in a way that only those born and raised there can truly understand and appreciate. The values, traditions, and resilience of mountain communities shaped who she was and remained a source of pride throughout her life.

Teresa touched countless lives as a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, teacher, coach, and mentor. She leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, laughter, strength, and love that will endure through the many people she influenced and inspired.

She is survived by her sister, Judy Jones Malone (Kelly) of Lexington; her nephews, Huey Jones of Lexington and Jeremy Jones (Renee) of Stanton; her niece, Cacie Turk of Lexington; her great-nephews, James Cody Jones, Noah Turk, Kash Jones and Caden Jones, and her great-niece, Kaylen Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Huey Jones and Betty Jones.

Visitation will be held at Maggard’s Mtn View Chapel in Hazard on Thursday, June 4, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by burial at Englewood Cemetery.
Though her voice is now silent, the love, humor, wisdom, and fierce devotion that defined Teresa Jones will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew her. Her memory will live on in the stories shared by family and friends and in the mountains she loved so dearly.

Born October 6th, 1937, Della was the daughter of Leslie Young and Meldora Allen. She grew up on Ball Creek in Knott County, but like many who’ve gone before, lived much of her life between the Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, Southern Ohio, and the Bluegrass of Central Kentucky.
