"I'm so OCD"
What crosses your mind when you hear this statement? Chances are you think about someone being neat, organized, and very clean. But OCD can look like so much more than the stereotypes we often see.
OCD can show up as persistent unwanted thoughts, overwhelming doubt, repeated checking or reassurance-seeking, mental rituals, or a constant feeling that you need to be certain before you can move on. And contrary to the stereotypes, some people with OCD can actually be quite messy and disorganized.
The symptoms of OCD can take up an extraordinary amount of time in a person's day, limit the things they'll do and places they'll go, and impact their relationships. And sometimes, people live with these symptoms for years without realizing they may be connected to OCD!
OCD is often misdiagnosed as anxiety or other mental health conditions. On average it takes between 7 - 17 years after the onset of symptoms before someone is correctly diagnosed and treated. 7 - 17 years! Nearly a decade or more of intrusive thoughts that feel impossible to ignore, compulsions that feel impossible to resist, and a life that feels increasingly overwhelming and full of distress.
MWR is determined to change that number. At MWR Counseling, we specialize in the treatment of OCD, including evidence-based approaches such as ERP and I-CBT, that can help you understand the cycle of OCD and build a different relationship with intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
All of our counselors are trained in recognizing and assessing for OCD symptoms so that any person who walks through our doors receives an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
If you recognize these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, reach out to meet with one of our counselors. You don't need to wait years (or decades!) to start feeling better.
