As the Big Island’s leading provider of inpatient and outpatient care, Hilo Medical Center delivers a full range of services and programs on our 20-acre campus. Hilo Medical Center is licensed for 157 beds for acute care and 35 beds for long-term care. We have 1,100 employees and a medical staff comprised 250 community physicians, physician assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, representing 33 specialties. As a medical center, we have a network of 9 outpatient clinics offering primary and specialty care. The hospital is a Level III Trauma Center which includes the second busiest emergency room in the state that provides 24-hour care to more than 49,000 patients annually. Hilo Medical Center has been nationally recognized for exceptional care as a “Top Performing” hospital. CMS ranked HMC 4 stars for Overall Quality, putting HMC among the top 20% of hospitals in the nation, the top 5 hospitals in the state and the only 4-star ranked hospital on Hawaii Island. HMC’s HealthConnect attained the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) Meaningful Use Stage 2 in 2014. In addition, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognized HMC for achieving Stage 7 on the EMR Adoption ModelSM. Hilo Medical Center also earned the HIMSS Nicholas E. STROKE EDUCATION OUTREACH! Mahalo to our Stroke Coordinator Caitlyn McAllister and Courtney Yonemori-Lara for attending the r Brain Injury Association's Mind Your Brain Hilo Health & Wellness Fair this last weekend. More info will be shared at this Friday's Ladies' Night Out event, hosted by Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi. Also, our Stroke Support Group is going strong. They meet every second Tuesday of the month 4-5 pm at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home's adult day room.

SUPPORT FROM THE START! Once we heard of Hurricane Lala's impact on our Kau Hospital & Clinic ohana, HBMC employees sprang into action. The Nurse Residency Council quickly organized a food drive, followed by our Cardiology clinic, then the whole hospital got involved with support form HR and Admin. Even our clinic at Puna Kai jumped into the mix. It really goes to show that our healthcare ohana supports each other to support healthcare in our around our island.

MAHALO PART 2: It's been two weeks since Hurricane Lala and we have so much to be grateful for that includes everyone who worked so hard to reopen the roads, bring back water, and turn the power back on - which means the AC came back on for our patients and staff. Many thanks to the support that rolled in to the Ka'u Hospital Charitable Foundation that translated into much needs support for our staff and their ohana. Stronger together - Ka'u Hospital & clinic and staff really showed that it means!

MAHALO GOVERNOR! Yesterday Governor Josh Green stopped by his old stomping grounds to assess the hospital's needs after Hurricane Lala. He met with old friends and patients and encouraged the staff to keep on going! In the aftermath of the storm, it's true - our staff in Kau can handle!
