Keith Funeral & Cremation

Keith Funeral & Cremation Family owned Funeral Home. Serving the families of Hilton Head Island Welcome to Keith Funeral And Cremation Services. At Keith, we have recognize that.

Our mission is simple, we offer outstanding service and compassion at arguably the worst time of someone’s life. We understand that calling a funeral home is not a call that anyone wants to make. Visiting a funeral home to make funeral arrangements is often a stressful experience that can begin with uncertainty and end with frustration. We treat you as if you were one of our family. Hilton Head is

a small town and developing and maintaining strong relationships is important to us. What makes us different? Mostly its the little things. We give every family the option of having one of our licensed funeral directors visit your home to handle the initial arrangements. Many times there is no need for the family to ever step foot in the funeral home if that is their choice. Obituary information, merchandise selection, and legal paperwork are handled right at the kitchen table. If you decide to visit the funeral home, you will immediately notice it is not decorated in traditional gloomy colors that are often associated with other establishments. Our chapel is small and intimate for smaller gatherings. Large services are typically held at a place of worship or country club and we can assist in any type of service at any venue. We are proud of our building and offer the only ADA compliant funeral home on the island. Our pricing structure is very simple and fair. There are no hidden “add ons” that can substantially increase cost. We welcome insurance assignments and do not add insult to injury by charging a processing fee. We have some veteran programs that reflect our appreciation for loyal service to our great nation. Our preplanning programs can be funded or unfunded, we welcome the chance to explain the differences and benefits of each. Most sincerely,
The Keith Family

Delays in Obtaining Military Documents
for Eligibility Determinations
Dear Funeral Directors:
We are asking for your assistance. As you may be aware, the government’s primary repository for military personnel records, the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), has been closed to the public since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to numerous COVID-19 exposures occurring with increasing frequency, the NPRC has informed us they have shut down most of their remaining operations indefinitely. This decision negatively impacts our ability to obtain documents to determine eligibility for interment in national cemeteries.
We will continue to make every attempt to assist Veterans and their families, but if a service member’s records cannot be obtained through any source other than NPRC, we may not be able to make a timely eligibility determination.
We ask you to inform family members of this issue and ask them to search for any additional military documents which may be in their possession. Documents kept by the Veteran may be the only documents available at this time to verify his or her eligibility for burial.
We also encourage you to ask family members to check the following:
Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or the American Legion. These organizations may have discharge documents on file for members.
Any orders the service member may have received or any documents showing a military service number would be helpful.
County clerk of the county where the service member would have returned from service. The service member may have filed their documents with the county upon discharge from military service.
If the service member has a set of dog tags, please send a clear photograph of them to our agency.
Any additional information provided may improve our ability to locate records. You may send any additional information or documents by fax at 1-866-900-6417 or by email at [email protected]. Please follow up on the fax or email with a phone call to 1-800-535-1117, Option 1, to alert us to this additional information. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your assistance in this emergency.

Evelyn Mary Olson passed away June 17th surrounded by her family.

She was born in Puerto Rico in 1940 to Paula (Soto) and Nicolas Garcia. She, along with her mother and sisters, moved to New York City. Evelyn’s young life consisted of lots of love and family. Surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins she adored, there was always music and dancing, dancing, dancing. At night Evelyn listened to country music and the Grand Ole Opry. Her love of country music remained throughout her life.

Evelyn was a lovely, vivacious and fun loving young woman. She enjoyed her time as a summer camp counselor and attended many dances. Just before her 18th birthday Evelyn pledged her love and married Edward Olson. For 61 years Evelyn and Eddie shared their lives. After living in the Bronx, they lived in New Jersey where together they raised four children, had ten grandchildren, one great grandchild with two more on the way. Her love for her grandchildren was evident for all to see as she lit up anytime one of them entered the room.

Sixteen years ago Evelyn and Eddie moved to Sun City in Bluffton, SC. They loved this new chapter in their lives and welcomed many into their home. Evelyn loved planning parties, creating a festive atmosphere and seeing people having a wonderful time. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining the new friends they had met.
She loved reading, taking cruises and singing. She enjoyed karaoke, especially performing Patsy Cline songs. She looked fabulous in cowboy hats and never looked her age. Above all she was loved and will be missed.

Garry Stuart Morrison of Hilton Head Island, SC passed away in peace, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, March 19, 2020, at the age of 71, after an exciting, meaningful and well-lived life. He was the loving husband of Jeanine Sawler, an amazing father of Sara Sigwart and her husband Jason, Brooke Messenger and her husband Dustin, and doting grandfather of Romie and Tucker. He was a quintessential and caring big brother to Glenn Morrison and his wife Sally, and endearing uncle to Andy and Garry Morrison.
Born in Montreal, Canada, he was the oldest child of William (Sandy) and Ruth Morrison. The family relocated to Olympia Fields, Illinois when he was 13, where he later met and married his former wife, Rebecca (Becky) Parsons. Garry attended Rich Central High School where he graduated at the age of 15. He went on to attend Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan, and was a member of the Adelphic Alpha Pi Fraternity. He spent his summers working as a life guard at the Park Forest Aqua Center.
Upon being married, Garry and Becky moved to Coral Gables, Florida where he attended law school at the University of Miami. He loved his Miami Hurricanes and was one of their biggest fans.
After living in Miami, Boca Raton, Longboat Key and Naples, Florida, Garry moved to Savannah Georgia, and then Hilton Head in 2000. His daughters soon followed, he met his love, Jeanine there, and shared almost two decades with them. He embraced the roll of Grandpa and relished in teaching Romie and Tucker how to swim, make his legendary chocolate chip cookies and watching Spongbob Squarepants.
His love Jeanine converted him to a Patriot’s fan later in life, and he became a “Son of Belichick”. He always gathered his friends and family to watch football and rugby games, and enjoy his perfectly done fresh shrimp and his famous spinach dip. Garry was an accomplished athlete, a student of martial arts and a proud member of the Trident (Miami) Rugby Football Club. He was an avid fisherman and was happiest when there was a salty breeze and sun on his face, a rod in his hand and was with friends and family.
Garry was well-known on the island for his kind and outgoing personality. He could walk into any room or pub in the world and make friends, philosophize any subject and play the best songs in the jukebox. He loved good music and played the saxophone; his love of Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, The Eagles, the Blues and so many others live on through all of his girls. He always had a smile, a new vocabulary word and a round of drinks for everyone. Garry’s spirit also lives on in the garden he and Jeanine planted and tended to, his beloved orchids that he bestowed on his loved ones and the vast horticultural knowledge he shared with us. He was also a voracious reader and loved history.
Garry will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Although he is leaving behind a family that loves him and will miss him beyond all measure, he will be welcomed in grace by those who have gone before him, including his loving parents and grandparents, dear friends, and family members. He left our world much too soon, leaving a space that will not easily be filled. He truly made the world a better and more beautiful place because he lived in it. He was an “every man”.
The family will host a Celebration of Life to be announced later this summer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head Island https://www.bgchiltonhead.org/take-action

New Procedures at VA National Cemeteries due to COVID-19

All Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemeteries are open and will continue to provide interments for Veterans and eligible individuals. However, the National Cemetery Administration is continuing to adjust its services in light of the best practices urged by the CDC in response to the COVID-19 epidemic. As a result, on Friday, March 20, NCA will only conduct committal services at our 142 cemeteries nationwide for groups of 10 or fewer people. Larger groups will be asked to reduce their numbers or be refused service. We appreciate your continued support in communicating and reinforcing this direction.

In addition, families should know that volunteer veterans honor guards may no longer be providing services at all cemeteries.

Starting March 23, 2020, as a matter of public health and safety, committal services and the rendering of military funeral honors, whether by military personnel or volunteer organizations, will not be conducted until further notice at VA national cemeteries. Immediate family members (limited to no more than 10 individuals) of the deceased may choose to witness the interment if desired. There is no service involved with witnessing an interment. Families will be able to view the interment of their loved one from a safe distance.

We are asking for your assistance in communicating the changes in operations to families that have interments scheduled and contact honors providers to cancel their services. Please contact the national cemetery where the interment is scheduled as soon as possible if the family wishes to postpone the interment. NCA will work to schedule a committal or memorial services at a later date for those families that choose to continue with the direct interment or postpone the interment.

Our cemeteries will remain open to visitors, but we strongly urge all guests to obey local travel restrictions and avoid unnecessary travel. Visitors should expect that certain portions of a cemetery typically open to the public may be closed (for example, public information centers, chapels). Please contact the local cemetery for more information.

As warranted, NCA will provide updates on the operating status of individual national cemeteries on our social media pages: https://www.facebook.com/NationalCemeteries and https://twitter.com/VANatCemeteries

For more information about the government’s response to COVID-19 please visit: https://www.coronavirus.gov

The National Cemetery Administration honors Veterans and their families with a final resting place.

Alan Robert Protheroe died surrounded by his three daughters on March 8 after celebrating his 96th birthday the previous week.

He was born in Beverly, New Jersey to parents Albert and Ethel Pearson Protheroe. Both of them emigrated from England and entered the United States through Ellis Island before he was born. He graduated from Wilbur Watts High School in Burlington, New Jersey in 1943 and immediately volunteered for the United States Marine Corps.

Alan attended boot camp at Parris Island, in Beaufort, South Carolina. This was followed by additional training to prepare him for his assignment to Marine Bombing Squadron 613 based on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific. Alan served as radioman and gunner on the B25 flight crew that participated in the Marshall Islands Operation.

The strong friendships with the VMB 613 men with whom he served were lifelong. He and his wife Jane attended many reunions across the United States. The highlight of the reunions was participation in the 50th anniversary commemoration of the battle for Kwajalein and Roi-Namur with members of VMB 613 included as honored guests in the ceremonies.

Following his discharge after the end of World War II, Alan returned to New Jersey to study engineering at Drexel University. He was employed at the R.D. Wood Company in Florence, New Jersey until he moved to E.F. Houghton and Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he worked for 21 years.

In 1988 Alan and his wife Jane Schnell Protheroe, to whom he was married for 67 years before her passing in 2014, settled in Hilton Head. After living on Blue Heron Point for 25 years, they moved to a home in The Cypress.

Through the years, Alan found enjoyment a variety of ways. Highlights included any time with his wife, fishing off his dock or boat after he moved to Hilton Head, and music--which was always playing in his home. His daughters especially remember his handyman skills; he seemed able to teach himself to do anything well.

He is survived by his daughters Nancy and Susan, both of Hilton Head, and Wendy of Newton, Massachusetts. He is also survived by grandsons Jeff, Evan, and Alexander, and Jeff’s children. His ashes will be interred at Beaufort National Cemetery as part of a military funeral honors ceremony with his family in attendance.
