🧠 DID YOU KNOW THURSDAY | YOUR LOWER BACK DOESN’T WORK ALONE!
Have you ever experienced lower back tightness after a long day of standing, bending, lifting, or physical activity?
You might be surprised by how much your hips contribute to those movements!
🔬 LET’S TALK ABOUT THE POSTERIOR CHAIN!
Your posterior chain is a group of muscles along the back of your body that work together to produce and control movement.
Three important muscle groups include:
💪 GLUTEUS MAXIMUS
One of your primary hip extensors. It helps generate force when standing up, climbing stairs, sprinting, and lifting.
💪 HAMSTRINGS
Assist with hip extension and knee flexion while helping control lower-body movement.
💪 ERECTOR SPINAE
A group of muscles running alongside your spine that help extend and stabilize your back.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
When you bend forward to pick something up, your hips and spine work together to control the movement.
As you return to standing, your glutes, hamstrings, and spinal muscles coordinate to help produce the force needed.
If one area lacks strength, endurance, or comfortable mobility, your body may adjust how it performs the movement.
However, lower back discomfort doesn’t automatically mean your glutes are weak or another muscle is compensating. Pain can have several contributing factors.
🏋️ MOVEMENT TIP:
Practice a controlled hip hinge!
Keep your feet about hip-width apart, soften your knees, and slowly move your hips backward while allowing your torso to lean forward.
Return to standing by extending your hips.
This movement helps develop coordination between your hips and trunk.
💆♀️ WHERE DOES MASSAGE THERAPY FIT IN?
Massage may help temporarily reduce muscular discomfort and improve your ability to move comfortably.
Combining soft tissue work with appropriate strengthening, mobility, and recovery strategies can support overall physical function.
Remember: Your muscles don’t work independently. They work together as a system!
