You got sober. So why isn't everything better?
Because putting down the drink or drug is only the beginning.
Broken trust doesn't rebuild overnight. Relationships take time to repair. Old thinking and behaviors don't disappear simply because the substance is gone.
Recovery requires more than abstinence. It takes honesty, accountability, consistency, and a willingness to live differently.
Getting sober is the beginning. What we do next matters just as much.
The good news? That work can lead to a life you never thought possible.

“But what if they don’t want to be there?”
They may not want treatment. They may be angry, resistant, or convinced they don’t belong.
But there’s a big difference between not wanting to be there and knowing you need to be there.
As our Clinical Director explains, if someone can recognize that they need help, even when they don’t necessarily want it, there’s still an opportunity for them to catch something that changes the direction of their life.
Willingness doesn’t always show up before treatment. Sometimes it develops while you’re there.

Can relapse happen when everything is going well?
Absolutely. Sometimes recovery works so well that we slowly stop doing the things that got us there.
Life gets better. We get comfortable. Meetings slip, calls don't get made, and the work takes a back seat.
When recovery gives you your life back, don't take your foot off the gas.

What removes the obsession of the mind?
Greg asks the question, and Chuck’s answer is simple: a spiritual experience.
But recovery doesn’t stop there. Chuck explains that staying in the “sunlight of the spirit” requires the maintenance and growth of that spiritual experience.
Recovery isn’t something we achieve once and then put on a shelf. The spiritual life has to be practiced, strengthened, and lived.
The spiritual experience may remove the obsession. The spiritual life is what we continue to grow.

At BARC, the spiritual side of recovery isn’t an afterthought. It’s at the center of the solution.
Alcoholism isn’t simply a matter of knowing better or wanting badly enough to stop. Many people reach a point where consequences, willpower, and even the memory of how bad it became are no longer enough.
That’s why recovery has to go deeper.
We address the physical.
We work on the mental and emotional.
But we believe the obsession of the mind requires a spiritual solution.
Getting sober removes the alcohol. The spiritual solution gives us a new way to live.
