Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital NICU families had a little extra fun and a bookworm visitor during our annual Babies with Books Read-a-Thon, a week dedicated to celebrating the joy and importance of reading to babies from the very beginning.

By encouraging families to read, talk and connect with their babies, our annual Babies with Books Read-a-Thon helps nurture bonding, early literacy and neurodevelopment one story at a time.

Around the age of 3, Zion was officially diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). After several temporary therapies and treatments, Zion qualified for selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, one of the most effective treatments for children with cerebral palsy. His family was thrilled for a long-term option.

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is one of the few pediatric neuroscience programs in the country offering the one-level laminectomy SDR procedure for children with cerebral palsy who suffer from spastic diplegia or spastic hemiplegia. For Zion and his family having access to this specialized procedure brought hope for the future.

Our team had a great time celebrating Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital being named a “Best Children’s Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report in 2026-2027! With seven nationally ranked pediatric specialties, we earned our spot as one of the top 3 hospitals in Texas and third in the Southwest Region. We also celebrated Obstetrics & Gynecology ranking third in the state and 42nd nationally.

Thank you to all the staff, affiliated providers, nurses, quality teams and all involved in this national achievement as well as the many other teams that keep our hospital running to best serve our patients and their families. We are so grateful for everyone’s dedication and hard work!

Vincent was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on December 5th, 2025. He has been in treatment for the last seven months.

Even though Vincent has been diagnosed with cancer, his family does their best to focus on the amazing things he is going to accomplish after his fight. "We treat this as a way for him to build his fortitude and character, and in the future, when he encounters setbacks and hardship, he will know that he can overcome them because he has already faced the ultimate test at only 9 years old," Vincent's mom, Andrea said.

Vincent's family wants others to know that the journey is not always linear. There will be difficult days but there will also be good days to appreciate and hold onto. Those days become important to look back on and draw strength from when the next challenge comes.

"From the PICU and ECMO teams who saved his life, to the oncology team who are ensuring he beats cancer so he can go on and achieve his dreams of being an astronaut, you have given Vincent a new chance at life and ensured that our family remains whole," Andrea said.

Karter was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2025 and has been receiving treatment for the past year. Throughout his journey, Karter has shown just how strong and brave he is, reminding everyone that his diagnosis doesn't define him, it's simply part of his story.

During treatment, a few things that have helped Karter through the process include the support of the Child Life team and facility dog Boris, as well as activities such as painting and making crafts. These activities can have a big impact on a child's spirit and help brighten their day.

Karter's parents would like other families to know that having faith, even when you may not understand it, can help you get through this chapter of life.

"The oncology team, doctors, social workers, child life specialists and everyone we have encountered since July 2025, you all are such wonderful people who work at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. We thank you for always taking great care of Karter and doing everything you can to help him along the way!" Karter's parents said.
