Today marks the start of Black Breastfeeding Week, a week set aside to acknowledge the racial disparities in infant mortality, promote health equity, and celebrate Black culture and families.
Studies show that Black families are more likely to be offered formula in the hospital instead of individualized lactation support. Add historical experiences and a lack of diversity in lactation specialists(our friends at The Obsidian Milk Collective is Alabama’s first Black-led lactation practice), and the barriers become even more complex.
This Black Breastfeeding Week, we celebrate families being able to choose the feeding journey that works for them. 🩵
