My office is full of antiques, but this post isn’t really about antiques. It’s about stories, being cared for, curiosity…and about how age, history, and imperfections aren’t flaws to hide.

I know this is a heated and sensitive topic right now and that everyone’s situation is different. This conversation is nuanced.

But I do think therapists should seriously consider the risks involved when building a livelihood through venture-backed online therapy platforms. These companies answer to investors first, and I believe we’re going to continue seeing that impact the insurance and mental health space over time.

As reimbursement rates shrink and insurance companies increasingly dictate how therapists do their jobs, more clinicians are going to leave insurance altogether, which ultimately limits access to care. I know that’s not what any of us want.

I also think there’s a difference between building a profile on someone else’s system and building something that actually belongs to you. I’ve personally never joined these platforms, they didn’t exist when I started my practice. I built locally through relationships, networking, and community, which was absolutely the slower, harder, and less convenient path.

But it’s mine.

And for many therapists, building independently can lead to work that feels more aligned, sustainable, and financially secure.

Still thinking about this conversation from last week. 🤍

It was an honor to speak at The Women’s Economic Development Council’s leadership development meeting about emotional agility, resilience, perfectionism, and burnout. These aren’t just concepts I teach in therapy, they’re things I’ve had to learn and live myself. I’m grateful for spaces where women can have honest conversations about leadership, ambition, and the cost of constantly pushing through.

Monday Motivation 💡

“The real question isn't if we can push through - we know we can do that. The real question is if we notice when we don't have to.”
— Louisa DiLeone, LPC-S at Bloom Counseling

There’s strength in perseverance. But there’s also wisdom in recognizing when rest, boundaries, or a different approach might serve us better.

A powerful reminder from our recent WEDC Leadership Development luncheon on emotional agility and resilience in leadership.

Many of us were taught that strength means pushing through, overriding ourselves, and staying productive no matter what. But that’s a very rigid way of living. And when flexibility is lacking, things eventually snap.

Real strength comes from checking in with yourself and making decisions based on your internal state and values…not just fixed ways of being (very hard for perfectionists).

Emotional agility is what makes resilience sustainable.

I haven’t been online as much because I’ve been outside! Plant sales, gardening, eating my lunch on the porch swing, walking, listening to the birds, keeping the squirrels out of my flower pots. Loving this season at my little cottage office already ˖𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒✧💌˚.⋆🌿

People assume that in therapy the therapist is the one doing all the teaching. But what about all the things our clients teach us? Even when it’s something we may already “know”, there’s something different about watching it unfold in real time in someone’s actual life (it lands so much deeper). We don’t just witness growth, we learn from it, too.

I used to rush through my mornings and pull into work on two wheels.

I used to schedule my days (even my weekends) back to back to back, no gaps to be found.

I used to tell myself I’d enjoy things later and that slowing down wasn’t an option. Somehow later never came.

The common denominator in all of it was me. I let my schedule control me and convinced myself that’s just how life had to be…that I was just “so busy”.

But that wasn’t exactly true. It was a story I was telling myself, then I allowed my actions and decisions to fulfill it.

Maybe it’s my age now, or the years I’ve spent recovering from perfectionism…but I don’t want to be the “busy one” anymore. I don’t want to feel overwhelmed by my own life. And I don’t want to feel like time is slipping away while I’m trying to keep up with it.

I don’t get bored anymore when my schedule isn’t packed. Now I enjoy my flowers, my swing, my pets…watching bugs and squirrels, fluffing pillows.

Slowing down didn’t take anything from me.
It gave me my life back. 🐿️

The best compliment I can receive is when someone walks up to my therapy office and says, “I knew I was in the right place because it looks just like you.” It warms my heart! Small, unassuming, a little whimsical, and comfy…yet it’s weathered some storms and still stands.
