Today marks the beginning of Respiratory Care Week.

💡 Did you know? Respiratory therapists can perform lung-function tests, manage ventilators, provide respiratory treatments, and teach patients and families how to use breathing equipment. Their work extends from emergency and critical care to rehabilitation and home care.

💡 Did you know? An infection preventionist is a specialized nursing-home role responsible for helping prevent the spread of infections throughout a facility.

In long-term care, that work can include surveillance, education, outbreak response, policy development, and helping staff follow infection-prevention practices. CDC provides specialized training for nursing-home infection preventionists covering infection-control programs, outbreak investigation, antibiotic resistance, and risk-reduction practices.

But the infection preventionist can't do it alone.

💡 Did you know? CDC guidance says healthcare workers should perform hand hygiene immediately before touching a patient, after touching a patient or their surroundings, after contact with body fluids or contaminated surfaces, and immediately after removing gloves.

Don't Put Off the Checkup

A mammogram can find breast cancer before it is large enough to feel or cause symptoms. That's one reason regular screening matters.

For women 40–74 at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a screening mammogram every two years. Women at higher risk, including those with certain inherited genetic changes such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, may need a different screening plan.

Depending on the situation, a healthcare provider may use:

🎀 Screening mammography for routine screening
🎀 3D mammography for breast imaging
🎀 Diagnostic mammography when there is a symptom or an abnormal screening result
🎀 Ultrasound or MRI for certain diagnostic or higher-risk situations
🎀 Biopsy when tissue needs to be examined to determine whether cancer is present

💡 Did you know? A 2026 study published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing examined the relationship between emergency-department staffing patterns, missed care, missed recognition of patient deterioration, and delays in care.

We usually think of bullying as something that happens at school. But healthcare workers can experience it at work, too.

💡 Did you know? Research on workplace bullying in healthcare has identified hierarchy, workplace culture, organizational power, and conflict as factors that can contribute to bullying between healthcare workers.

It can look like:

👩‍⚕️ A nurse belittling a CNA because of their role.
🩺 A physician or supervisor speaking to staff in a demeaning or intimidating way.
🤝 Experienced staff excluding a new or temporary team member instead of welcoming them into the team.
🙄 Rolling eyes, dismissing questions, withholding information, or deliberately making someone feel like they don't belong.

Healthcare has enough pressure without coworkers making the workplace harder for one another.

A healthy team should make room for respect, questions, collaboration, and different levels of experience. Everyone involved in patient care deserves to be treated professionally, whether they've been at the facility for 20 years or are filling a shift for the first time.

And when people feel respected, they are more likely to communicate, ask questions, and speak up when something doesn't look right. That's important for patient safety, too.

In a hospital or long-term care facility, fire safety isn't just about the building. It's about protecting the patients and residents who may depend on healthcare staff to keep them safe.

💡 Did you know? In U.S. medical facilities, among more serious nonconfined fires, electrical malfunctions and appliances have been leading causes, making electrical and equipment safety especially important.

With this year's theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” charging practices are worth a closer look, too.

🔌 Use manufacturer-approved chargers and accessories
🔋 Remove damaged batteries or equipment from service
🔥 Keep charging equipment away from materials that can burn
⚡ Don't overload outlets or use damaged cords
👀 Report electrical or equipment hazards promptly.

Fire prevention is only part of the equation. Healthcare facilities often rely on a defend-in-place approach, using fire doors, alarms, sprinklers, compartmentation, and trained staff to protect patients and residents while the situation is assessed.

That means healthcare teams need to know:

🚨 What the fire alarm signals mean
🚪 Where evacuation routes and exits are located
📣 How to report a fire or other emergency
👩‍⚕️ Their role in helping patients and residents who may need assistance moving to safety.
