Every breath counts, and respiratory therapists help make lifesaving care possible. During Respiratory Care Week, HCA Midwest Health joins our broader HCA Healthcare network to recognize the important role respiratory therapists (RTs) play in caring for patients and supporting care teams.

With specialized training in lung and respiratory care, RTs provide expert care during critical moments — from emergency care and intensive care to recovery and ongoing support.

As part of HCA Healthcare, RTs collaborate with care teams across a network that supported approximately 47 million patient encounters in 2025, including 10 million emergency room visits. Through their clinical skill, compassion and collaboration, they help care for patients when it matters most.

To our RTs across HCA Healthcare, thank you for the specialized care you provide through critical moments.

Your age, family health history and other breast cancer risk factors can all play a role in when to begin screening. For people at average risk, screening mammograms often start at age 40, but your doctor can help you decide what’s right for you based on your health history and personal risk. Congratulations to Kalaa Thomas, an ER nurse with HCA Midwest Health and Healthtrust Workforce Solutions, for being honored as the September recipient of the Blue KC Answering the Call award at a recent Kansas City Royals game!

Kalaa became a nurse after making a promise to her mother, who died of breast cancer, that she would pursue a career in nursing. As an ER nurse, she has found purpose in helping people during some of their most vulnerable moments.

During COVID-19, Kalaa answered the call to serve in California, where the need for ER nurses was great. The experience took a heavy toll, and when she returned home, she realized she was still carrying the weight of what she had seen and experienced. Through The Battle Within, an organization that supports former military personnel and first responders coping with hidden trauma, Kalaa found support, healing and a path back to the work she loves. Today, she gives back as a mentor, helping others navigate their own healing journeys.

Please join us in congratulating Kalaa on this meaningful recognition and thanking her for the compassion, resilience and heart she brings to our community.
