Mowing season doesn’t end on a set date in New Jersey.

As temperatures cool, grass growth gradually slows, but if your lawn is still growing, it still needs to be mowed.

Our latest blog covers how to tell when you’re finally done for the year, why you shouldn’t scalp the lawn for one last cut, what to do with falling leaves, and what lawn care can still be done once mowing season winds down.

Read more:

When should you stop mowing for the year? Here’s how to tell when your New Jersey lawn is done growing and what to do before winter.

'Tis the season for deer rub in New Jersey. As we get further into fall, bucks are becoming more active and rubbing their antlers against trees to mark territory. Unfortunately, this can cause some serious damage, especially to young trees with thinner bark.

Deer rub can strip away bark, damage the tissue underneath, and in severe cases, even kill a tree. If you have young or newly planted trees on your property, here are a few things you can do to protect them:

• Install trunk guards or wire cages. A sturdy physical barrier can help prevent bucks from reaching the trunk. Just make sure there's enough room for the tree to grow.

• Keep an eye out for damage. Look for scraped, shredded, or missing bark, particularly on smaller trees.

• Don't wait until you see damage. Once a buck strips away the bark, the damage can't simply be reversed. Protecting vulnerable trees ahead of time is your best bet.

Antler rubbing isn’t the only deer damage to watch for. As we head toward winter, deer will also feed on the leaves, twigs, and buds of trees and shrubs, often causing significant damage to plants on your property.

If deer are regular visitors to your property, it’s worth getting ahead of the browsing before winter really sets in. Aspen Tree and Turf offers organic deer protection treatments to help discourage feeding on your trees and shrubs.

Missed the fall seeding window? Don’t panic.

By this point in the season, new grass has less time to germinate and get established before colder temperatures arrive. Putting seed down too late can mean poor establishment and a lot of wasted time, effort, and money.

If you didn’t get to aeration and seeding this fall, the best move now is to focus on taking care of the lawn you already have:
âś… Keep mowing as long as the grass is actively growing
âś… Keep leaves from sitting in thick, wet layers on the lawn
âś… Avoid unnecessary traffic on thin or stressed areas
âś… See if a lime treatment is right for your lawn. If your soil is too acidic, lime can help raise the pH so your grass can make better use of the nutrients already available.

Seeding works best when the timing is right. Sometimes waiting and planning for the next good window makes more sense than trying to squeeze it in too late.

Doing some fall cleanup and freshening up your mulch? Here’s one thing to avoid: piling it against the trunk of your trees.

That “mulch volcano” may look neat, and we get the temptation to use up all that mulch you just paid for, but your trees may end up being the ones paying the price. Mulch piled against the trunk holds moisture against the bark, can contribute to decay, and may encourage roots to grow around the trunk, where they can eventually restrict the flow of water and nutrients.

Mulch is still a good thing for trees when it’s applied correctly. Spread it out over the root zone, keep the layer reasonable, and leave some space around the trunk so the root flare stays visible.

Think donut. 🍩 Not volcano. 🌋

If you’re working on your landscaping this fall, take a quick look at the trees while you’re at it. If the mulch is touching the trunk, pull it back a bit.

Did you know fall lawn fertilizer has a deadline in New Jersey?

Beginning November 15, homeowners can no longer apply lawn fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus. The cutoff for certified professional applicators is December 1.

That doesn’t mean all lawn care has to stop. Lime can still be applied during the blackout when soil conditions show it is needed.

Our latest blog explains why the law exists, how much time is left, and what can still be done for your lawn after the fertilizer window closes.

Learn more:

New Jersey’s fall fertilizer deadline is approaching. Learn the cutoff dates, why the law exists, and when your lawn may need lime instead.

We’re wrapping up Lawn Round 5 of our 6-Step Lawn Care Program and we couldn’t have asked for much better scenery.

Last week brought us to Grafton House and Sayen House & Gardens in Hamilton for early fall fertilization and broadleaf w**d control.

We’re helping lawns replenish nutrients, strengthen their root systems, and tackle late-season w**ds before winter.

We’ve been tending to these properties all season, and the results are doing a pretty good job of speaking for themselves. 🌱

Our October Plant of the Month: Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus)

Coralberry is a native shrub that is easy to pick out in fall, when clusters of pink to reddish berries develop along the stems. Those berries can remain after the leaves drop, so October is when they really become one of the plant’s defining features.

Coralberry Quick Facts:
🍂 Native deciduous shrub
🌤️ Grows in full sun to partial shade
🪴 Adaptable to a range of soils once established
đź”´ Produces clusters of pink to reddish berries in fall
🌿 Can spread over time and form colonies

Because coralberry can spread over time, it is usually better suited to naturalized areas, woodland edges, slopes, or larger planting beds rather than tight foundation plantings.

You may also hear coralberry called buckbrush or Indian currant. It is a member of the honeysuckle family.
