Ever find yourself saying to your child, or maybe even whispering to yourself, "Just focus more?" It’s such a simple, common phrase, but it’s often one of the most frustrating hurdles to overcome. We tend to treat focus like a light switch that we can just flip on, but for many, it isn't a lack of effort or willpower. It is a matter of how our eyes and brain are working together to process the world.

When the visual system is struggling to track, team, or focus, even the simplest task can feel like an uphill battle. At Vision Development Center, we see how often "inattention" is actually a visual challenge in disguise. Sometimes, the key to unlocking better focus isn't trying harder. It is helping the eyes work more efficiently. Let’s be kinder to ourselves and our kids today. Sometimes the biggest win isn't just "trying harder," but giving the eyes the support they need to succeed.

If you’ve ever wondered if you or your child struggles with focus it might actually be visual; send us a message. We would love to answer your questions and share how we help you and or your child find their focus.

Standard and specialized exams may seem similar but are very different much like two sides of the same visual coin.

Standard eye exams check how clearly you see from 20 feet away and verify the health of ocular structures. Specialized binocular vision and vision processing assessments determine how well your visual system is communicating with your balance, movement and coordination centers in your brain and body.

When your eyes fight to stay aligned, track, focus, and judge depth your brain burns double the energy. Stamina starts to tank and becoming overwhelmed is hard to avoid.

Here is how hidden vision integration issues actually show up:

For Kids:
đź”´ Skipping lines or losing their place while reading.
đź”´ Tilting their head or closing one eye to focus.
đź”´ Struggling to catch a ball or misjudging distances.

For Adults:
🔵 Brain fog, fatigue, or headaches after computer work.
🔵 Re-reading lines or losing your spot when tired.
🔵 Anxiety in heavy traffic or trouble parking.
🔵 Hitting a sudden plateau in sports or coordination.

Look beyond 20/20 eyesight and schedule a comprehensive visual function exam to see if your eyes are actually working for you rather than against you.

These exercises train the brain to process visual information when either we or the objects around us are moving. The swing exercise integrates eye tracking with the inner ear to stabilize vision while the body is in motion, while the spinning object exercise isolates eye mechanics to calculate speed and timing from a stationary position. Combining both builds a complete visual system for real-world coordination, balance, and focus.

We would love the opportunity to get to know you! If you feel that vision therapy could benefit you or a loved one in any way, please don't hesitate to call our office.

If you walked into our clinic today, you might think you stumbled into a high-tech athletic training facility by mistake! (Don't worry, you can leave the heavy barbells at home).

But here’s the truth! your eyes don't work in a vacuum.

At some point, the body and the eyes have to be trained together, not independent of one another. That’s exactly why you see our patients doing dynamic, movement-based exercises like in the photo below! We aren't just checking if you can read the bottom line of an eye chart; we are training your brain, eyes, and body to team up and work as a perfect unit.

You don't need a doctor's note or a special referral to start improving how your eyes and body work together. You can take control of your vision care today.

Vision Development Center is a huge part of the community because of one dreamer. One doctor decided that even though vision therapy is a unique niche, and even though our area might not have fully understood what it was yet, she wanted to see this community flourish.

Dr. Joan Bauernfeind saw a need and chose to build a place where local families could find life changing developmental vision care right here at home. Her passion and dedication are the reasons the Vision Development Center exists today, helping patients unlock their full potential and see the world more clearly.

Thank you, Dr. Joan, for your vision, your heart, and your commitment to making our community a brighter place to grow.

It looks like a simple plastic card, but the Lifesaver Card is a gym for your brain.

We use these in vision therapy to train your eyes to work together as a team. By "fusing" those circles into one 3D image, patients improve their focus, reduce eye strain, and stop words from "floating" on the page.

It’s all about building visual flexibility for a clearer, more comfortable world!

"What is the end goal of vision therapy?"

From a clinical perspective, we’re looking for a stronger brain-body connection and optimized visual processing. But if you want to know the true heart of VDC, it’s much simpler than that.

We want our clients to have great lives. We want the daily frustrations to fade and the 'hard' things to become easy. Our mission isn’t just about better eyesight; it’s about giving you the freedom to thrive without your vision holding you back.
