Dr. Roberts explains that when patients taking levothyroxine continue to experience thyroid-related symptoms, some may experience improvement after switching to desiccated thyroid extract (DTE), which contains both T4 and T3.
He explains that desiccated thyroid was used as a thyroid hormone replacement therapy long before levothyroxine became widely used. Dr. Roberts also discusses how compounded thyroid medications may offer additional options for patients who need a more individualized approach to their thyroid hormone replacement.
