Dr. Guy’s lifelong commitment to helping others in the medical field is an inspiration to us all, and that same spirit of service goes far beyond his profession, it reflects the very heart of our school: empowering people, protecting others, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us.

One of the skills we teach throughout our Youth Program is keeping your hands up and protecting your head and face. We call it:
🥥 “Protect the Coconut!” 🥥
It’s fun for the kids, but there’s an important lesson behind it: stay alert, protect yourself, make smart decisions, and be prepared for real-world situations.

Our Youth Program builds confidence, awareness, discipline, focus, and practical self-defense skills that kids can carry with them for life — both on and off the mats. 👊🌟

The danger of both hands on one side of the center line 🔥
There are many ways to force this situation. In this sequence, Julian uses a clean arm drag to get both of hands trapped on the same side.
A common reaction is for the opponent to drive their weight down, cross their head back over to the far shoulder, and pin it to the mat — trying to free their trapped hand and re-establish the center line.
Instead of fighting that pressure, we use the principle of Kuzushi (off-balancing). We ride their momentum, reverse the direction 180°, and come up on top with a sumi-gaeshi sweep counter.
Technique > strength.
Control the center line, control the position.

Today we honor the birth of Helio Gracie. His vision of leverage, timing, and efficiency changed martial arts forever. I was fortunate enough to visit him in Brazil and train with him. Teaching a Sumi Gaeshi variation from the ground when someone is trying to pass around your guard.
Key points: • Use their forward pressure and momentum • Hook with your foot under their hip • Elevate and roll them over • Land in top position
No strength required — just good timing and direction of force !!!
