Two Indiana optometry practices are bringing surgery in-house. This week, VisionQuest Eyecare and Zionsville Eyecare are opening their own office-based surgical suites.

Both are independent, optometrist-owned practices. Their patients can now have cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange in the practices they already know. Each practice works with a contracted surgeon who operates in its office, so the optometrist stays involved from the first exam through recovery.

VisionQuest had been referring out more than 30 cataract patients a month. Now that care stays in-house.

Dr. Nick Garn has spent 20 years building his OD practice and asks himself one key question when making big decisions for his practice: does this serve our mission to deliver the best in personalized eye care?

Surgery, now close to home in Butler, PA.

This week, Butler Eye Care LLC opens its optometrist-owned office-based surgery (OBS) suite. Patients can now have cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange in Butler, without traveling to an outside facility.

An ophthalmologist performs the procedures in the practice. Drs. Jennifer and Michael McGrath and their team handle evaluation before surgery, management after it, and ongoing eye care.

Dr. Chris Browning has run a full-service optometric practice for 20 years — heavy on vision therapy, myopia management, and long-term patient relationships. When his patients needed ophthalmic surgery, he referred them out.

Ophthalmic care can be an hour's drive away — and that trip often costs a patient an entire day. For older patients or anyone already anxious about the procedure, that drive isn't a minor inconvenience. It's a barrier to care.

Dr. Browning built a OBS suite in Greenwood, IN and will be sharing it with other ODs in the area — filling a gap in premium cataract and refractive care that his community didn't have before.
