There is a question most patients never know to ask before their dental implant surgery, and the answer matters more than most people realize.

When a dentist places an implant, bone grafting is often part of the procedure. The material used for that graft can come from several sources, and one of the most commonly used is cadaver bone, which is bone harvested from a human donor, processed, and prepared for surgical use. For patients who care about what goes into their body and how their immune system responds to foreign material, knowing what bone is being used and asking about biocompatible alternatives is an important part of the informed consent process.

You have every right to ask this question before your surgery. A provider who practices with a whole body philosophy will
welcome it.

Most people don't connect their nightly Advil PM to what's happening in their brain. 🧠

But Dr. Troy Rodriguez, a dentist with 33 years of experience, has watched this play out in his own patients, the ones who couldn't sleep, who reached for an over-the-counter pill every night without thinking twice, and what he now understands about what that means for their long-term brain health is something every patient deserves to hear.

He wasn't reading from a study. He was talking about the people sitting in his chair.

This is one moment from a much bigger conversation about mercury, sleep, airway, and the connections between your mouth and your mind that most people never hear about in a dental chair.

Something I want to address because it comes up more than it should, a lot of dentists disqualify themselves from wellness dentistry before they ever give it a real look, and it's usually because they have a narrow definition of what it actually means.

Wellness dentistry is not a single specialty. It is the umbrella that covers biological dentistry, cosmetic, restorative, laser, ozone, digital smile design, high performance leadership, team culture, and your own health and wellbeing as a clinician. Every dentist who is practicing with intention and genuinely thinking about the whole patient is already operating within this philosophy, whether they are using that language or not.

I have had dentists tell me they don't think they belong in this space because they are not doing safe mercury removal or ozone therapy. Biological dentistry is one part of a much larger conversation. If you do cosmetic dentistry with care and integrity, that is wellness dentistry.

If you are building a team culture that supports your patients and your own sustainability as a clinician, that is wellness dentistry too. The definition belongs to you, and the clearer you are about what it means in your practice, the more confidently you can communicate it to your patients, your team, and the world. 🦷🌿

Most conversations about brain health focus on diet, sleep, and exercise. Very few of them address what may be happening at a deeper level with mold, heavy metals, and parasites, and the research connecting all three to cognitive decline is worth knowing about.

These three factors do not just create problems independently. When they are present together, the immune and neurological burden compounds in ways that accelerate inflammation and dysfunction throughout the body. Dr. Dale Bredesen's Alzheimer's protocol specifically addresses mold, parasites, and heavy metal toxicity as interconnected drivers of cognitive decline, and his work has changed how a growing number of clinicians think about prevention.

If you have been experiencing brain fog, fatigue, or unexplained immune issues, these are conversations worth having with a provider who looks at the full picture.

I started journaling consistently and the difference it has made in how I think, how I make decisions, and honestly how I feel physically has been real.

Writing has a way of organizing what your mind is trying to process in the background all day, and when that processing finally has somewhere to go, your nervous system gets a break it did not know it needed.

Research shows that expressive writing lowers cortisol, improves immune function, and supports better sleep, three things that are foundational to everything else we do for our health.

It does not have to be structured or lengthy. Some mornings it is a few sentences about what I am grateful for. Some days it is working through something that has been sitting heavy. The format matters less than the consistency. If you have been thinking about starting, consider this your nudge. 🌿✨

There is a conversation happening in plastic surgery offices that has not made its way into dental intake forms yet, and it needs to.

Breast implants have serial numbers and expiration dates. Patients with implants know this. Most dentists do not know it is relevant to them. When implants begin to leak or when the body starts reacting to them, the symptoms are diffuse enough that nobody connects them to the source. The patient presents with back pain, food sensitivities, disrupted sleep, and chronic inflammation, and each of those gets addressed in isolation by a different provider.

As dentists who think about the oral systemic connection, asking whether a patient has breast implants and understanding the timeline of those implants is part of getting the full picture. The body does not compartmentalize the way our medical system does, and our intake process needs to reflect that.

I talk a lot about whole body health with my patients and with the dentists I work with, and one of the things I come back to constantly is that rest is not separate from health. It is part of it.

Your nervous system needs restoration just as much as your schedule needs productivity, and most of us have spent years treating rest like something we have to earn rather than something our body genuinely requires to function well.

I needed this trip more than I realized. And being here reminded me that you cannot sustain what you never restore. Whatever that looks like for you right now, even if it is twenty minutes and not twenty days, give yourself permission to actually take it. 🌿✨

Your dentist's open floor plan might be the reason they won't remove your mercury fillings safely. 🦷

When Dr. Troy and Dr. Beena decided to go metal-free, they ran into a problem. Their existing space had no way to isolate operatories and control mercury v***r during removal. So they built a new facility from scratch.

That's what taking a protocol seriously actually looks like, and it's a very different conversation than what most patients are having at their dental appointments.
