What do 2 slices of Spam, 1 pack of instant saimin, and 1 big cookie have in common?
Each is about 100 g of ultraprocessed food. For every 100 g of ultraprocessed food eaten per day, heart disease risk rose about 14%. That adds up fast: ultraprocessed foods make up more than half the calories in the average U.S. diet, and heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the U.S. Higher intake was also linked to diabetes, cancer, and early death.
The key is replacing rather than just restricting. Keep the craving, swap the food:
Spam → egg or canned salmon musubi
Instant saimin → somen or udon with veggies & egg
Big cookie → roasted Okinawan sweet potato
Start with one swap a day. Small changes add up.
