Little Objects, BIG Communication Opportunities! 💚

Object schedules help students with visual impairments anticipate daily routines while building an important foundation for symbolic communication.

The key is choosing objects that are meaningful from the STUDENT’S perspective!

Think about what the student actually experiences during an activity—not just what we see. The feel of a pull-up, the movement of a spinner, or a familiar texture can all become meaningful representations of activities.

With consistent use, students can learn that objects represent activities and eventually use them to make choices, request, and express preferences!

October is AAC Awareness Month! 🍂💬

Supporting AAC shouldn’t have to mean starting from scratch every day.

⚠️ Spoiler alert: This post discusses Grace and Rocky’s relationship and key plot developments in Project Hail Mary.

Before Grace and Rocky can solve the enormous problem in front of them, they have to figure out how to understand each other.

They begin by building shared meaning. Their new language first helps them manage their very different physical needs and safely share an environment. That progression may feel familiar to SLPs, families, and educators. For many beginning communicators, expressing wants and needs is also one of the first functions we support:

Help me. Stop. Wait. I need something different.

But communication quickly becomes so much more. It gives us a way to connect, share knowledge, disagree, joke, participate, and learn from one another.

Project Hail Mary offers a powerful reminder:

Before we can teach anything else, we have to believe there is a communicator there.

We do NOT drop you into schools and disappear. We meet with our team regularly, negotiate for you, troubleshoot with you and support you with school administrators when needed.

We’re excited to announce a new learning partnership with The Informed SLP

Our SLPs serve students and patients with a wide variety of communication and learning needs. Keeping our clinical knowledge current is essential—and The Informed SLP makes that easier by curating relevant research and presenting it in a clear, practical, and easily digestible format.

Beginning next month, TISLP research reviews will guide our monthly Research Review staff meetings. These group discussions will give our SLPs dedicated time to explore current evidence, exchange clinical perspectives, and consider how research applies across the diverse needs of our students and patients.

Our memberships will also give each SLP the flexibility to pursue independent self-study based on their caseload, interests, and professional learning goals.

We’re looking forward to learning together and translating research into thoughtful, evidence-informed practice!

These are 7 of the 16 personal AAC devices we’ve been helping deliver to students in our partner school districts over the last few weeks! 💬🎉

The process starts at school. We evaluate the student, provide the IEP team with AAC recommendations and options, and the team decides which materials and equipment best fit the student. From there, we help navigate the funding process and get the system into the student’s hands.

And we don’t just deliver a device. Each student receives:

🎯 Implementation support for families and school teams

This week, Barbara is meeting with 7 families to help them get comfortable with their child’s new communication system and ready to use it in everyday life.
