Heat stress in calves is a bigger issue than most people realize. While cows often get the most attention in summer because of the impact heat stress has on milk production, don't forget about the calves!

A recent study in the Journal of Dairy Science investigated water intake of Holstein heifer calves in the first week of life. Regardless of season, within the first week of life 20% of calves were voluntarily drinking some water.

Offering water to calves in the first week is often an over-looked practice, but the data from this study argues that we should view it as a non-negotiable.

Offering water early to calves is a low-cost and positive measure for animal health and welfare, especially when it comes to early-life heat mitigation.

When do you first offer water to your calves?

Weaning creates major shifts in diet, intake and gut function, making rumen stability one of the most important parts of calf health management.

A young calf's body is 80% water. They dehydrate very quickly compared to adult cattle (50% water).

At 70 degrees F. a 99-pound calf is going to need approximately 0.79 gallons more water to replace respiratory and sweat losses.

The kicker is that water doesn't always hydrate the cell. We can improve hydration during heat stress by providing electrolyte minerals to improve fluid balance.

Immu-Lyte Black Label is formulated specifically for hydration. (Not to be used as a scours therapy)

Immu-Lyte is black because it contains humic and fulvic acids, some of nature's most perfect and powerful polyelectrolytes.

We also utilize betaine as a powerful osmolyte to help cells retain water and maintain function during dehydration and osmotic stress.

Support immune performance and heat stress resilience by providing calves with 1-2 liters per day of Immu-Lyte Black Label.

BRD affects an estimated 18% of pre-weaned dairy heifers, 37% of post-weaned dairy heifers, and 21% of feedlot cattle.

While antibiotic therapies are an important part of fighting BRD, respiratory disease is not something that can fully be combated with a needle.

Disease control should begin with exceptional management and nutrition to minimize the stress on incoming calves.

TomaHawk iL Zn works naturally to enhance innate immunity, support a healthy gut, mitigate stress, and modulate inflammation. Allowing cattle to thrive in times of stress.
