JUNE IS CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH. What to know ...

1) A cataract makes the lens of your eye cloudy, which can make your vision blurry, dull, or like you’re looking through a foggy window.

2) Cataracts happen mostly as people get older, but some kids can be born with them too.

3) You might notice trouble seeing at night, glare from lights, or colors not looking as bright.

4) A cataract can be treated with surgery, where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear one to help you see better.

Your Vision Solutions eye doctor is your trusted pre- and post-surgery cataract specialist and will work with your eye surgeon when it is time to remove your cataract for the best surgical outcome.

An estimated 12% of U.S. adults have used GLP-1 medications. For many, these treatments offer meaningful progress in managing diabetes or weight. But rare and potentially serious eye complications have also been reported.

These potential side effects highlight the importance of having a comprehensive eye exam before starting a GLP-1 medication—if you have not had an eye exam within the past 12 months—to establish a baseline for your eye health. Routine follow-up exams during treatment are also important, particularly for patients with diabetes or macular degeneration.

Early detection of changes to your eye health can help protect your vision. To schedule your next eye exam, visit myvisionsolutions.com.

Just like your skin, your eyes can suffer cumulative damage from years of exposure to the sun's UV rays, and can contribute to early onset of cataracts, macular degeneration affecting your central vision, photokeratitis ("sunburn" of the eye), growths on the eye (pterygium), cancerous growths on eyelids and surrounding tissue.

While everyone should protect their eyes from UV light, certain groups face higher risks: people who spend significant time outdoors and children. Children's eyes transmit more UV light to the retina than adult eyes, making early protection crucial.

If you have a quality pair of sunglasses that offer 100% UVA and UVB protection, consider this your friendly reminder to please wear them! If you need a quality pair, we encourage you to take advantage of our Sunglasses Savings Event going on through June.

Please join us in congratulating Misty on her 10-year work anniversary at Vision Solutions!

As the Director of Clinics based out of our Lamar office, Misty plays a vital role in shaping the exceptional patient experience we strive to provide each day. Through her team-focused leadership and knowledgeable staff training, she continually elevates the standard of patient care across our organization.

Misty says one of her favorite aspects of her job is the variety each day brings, and the ability to step in where needed most.

Her passion for the optometric profession extends beyond Vision Solutions. She currently serves as treasurer of the Missouri Optometric Association's (MOA) Paraoptometric Board and was honored in 2024 as MOA Paraoptometric of the Year—well-deserved recognition for her commitment, expertise, and service to the field.

When she's not working, you'll find her spending time with her kiddos or tending to her garden.

Misty, thank you for 10 years of dedication to our team and patients. We are grateful for all you do and look forward to celebrating many more milestones with you!

Nearly half the world’s population is predicted to be myopic (nearsighted) by 2050 — affecting an estimated 5 billion people.

Researchers link the rise to lifestyle and environmental factors—more time viewing digital screens, less outdoor activity, and reduced exposure to natural light.

How to help reduce risk of myopia progression in children:
1) Spend 1–2 hours outdoors daily
2) Take regular breaks during prolonged digital screen viewing
3) Keep up with their professional routine eye exams
Treatments like the new Stellest eyeglass lenses, specialty contacts, and low-dose atropine drops are designed to help slow progression, but early prevention and intervention are key.

Ideally, nutritional support for good eye health should come from natural foods. However, we know it's not always convenient or possible to obtain sufficient amounts of nutrients through diet alone. Your Vision Solutions eye doctor knows your eye-health history and can recommend the appropriate high-quality supplements to support your ocular health and tear functioning.
