Hedwig House Inc.

Hedwig House Inc. Hedwig House, Inc. provides comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation services to residents of Montgomery County, PA. was formed in 1976.

Hedwig House began its existence on October 1, 1975, with the guidance, support and direction of three women with a commitment to bring service to people with mental illness and a sincere and abiding interest in their quality of life and recovery: Lois Jahsmann, Patricia Kind, and Naomi Dank. Based on Lois’ experience with a program in England called Places for People, the original program focused

on the housing needs of individuals with mental illness in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It has since evolved into comprehensive, client-centered programming offering Psychiatric Rehabilitation and rental subsidy services throughout Montgomery County. While initially a component of the Central Montgomery County Mental Health / Mental Retardation Center, a separate Board of Directors under the name of Hedwig House, Inc. The new organization contracted with the Montgomery County Office of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Drug and Alcohol, and Behavioral Health to provide services to mental health consumers. This proactive and creative action introduced a Recovery-focused rehabilitation service which complimented community treatment services and, at the time, had only a few counterparts throughout Pennsylvania or the nation. In retrospect, it was the precursor of the broad Psychiatric Rehabilitation initiative introduced statewide throughout Pennsylvania.

Robbie, one of our members, and Ken, a board member and volunteer, recently went to a book signing for Robbie's favorite football player, Brandon Graham of the Philadelphia Eagles. He recently released a children's book and was doing a book signing as a part of a fundraising event to benefit CASA Youth Advocates, Delaware and Chester Counties. It was an exciting and fulfilling event that is just one example of how these two friends spend their time together, while also getting to help support a great local cause - supporting and advocating for vulnerable youth.

Thank you very much to Rep. Melissa Cerrato, Rep. Nancy Guenst, and Rep. Ben Sanchez as well as all their staff for having us at their Senior Resource Fair last week! Our members enjoyed meeting people from the community and talking about Hedwig House's Services. We passed out healthy snacks and health and hygiene items to attendees as a part of our Healthier You Community Campaign. Members also picked up information about local resources and a bunch of giveaway items, including snacks and drinks provided by the Representatives. We really enjoyed taking part in such a great community event!

Celebrating mental health awareness month in May and remembering that taking care of our physical health is a part of taking care of our mental health!

Pictured is Ricky, who are staff supported in getting routine bloodwork done. We encourage our Members, staff, and the community to remember your preventative health screenings.

The stress on one's body from suffering with mental health symptoms and the stigma of diagnosis have a major negative effect on one's physical health. Certain mental health concerns can lead to difficulty in accessing healthcare alone and/or isolation. On the other hand, healthy diet, excercize and proper medical treamtent can enhance one's mental health and capacity for coping with mental illness and other life stressors.

It's important to take care of our minds and bodies!

What a wonderful and successful fundraising event! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Spotlight on Mental Health event in person and participated from home! We enjoyed a great meal together, great conversation, and many games that helped raise money to support our members. Thanks as well Boardroom Spirits Distillery for helping us host the event. With so many staff, volunteers, board members, and donors present, there was a lot of discussion and speeches about the experiences of those close to Hedwig House. But, the most impactful part of the night was a video put together with our members explaining what Hedwig House means to them and how it has improved their lives. Thanks again to everyone who participated in this event and have supported us in our mission to assist those with mental health conditions in living more independent and fulfilling lives!
