Everyone knows for breastfeeding we want BIG open mouths, widest they can and to avoid narrow latches.

We want a baby BREASTfeeding NOT NIPPLEfeeding.

People have gotten confused with fl**ge sizing where we (now and correctly) measure the diameter of the ni**le. The issue is they think the ni**le shield should be the same size.

Wrong.

The placenta plays an integral role in a mother’s ability to make milk and have a full supply. What happens if there are fragments or pieces of placenta left inside after delivery? How placenta encapsulation can also negatively impact milk supply, antenatal colostrum expression and nursing through a subsequent pregnancy will never use or run out of colostrum.

Pediatrician Dr Howard Bennett and his wife, Jan (an art teacher) wrote this and it’s a must read. Filled with hilarious illustrations by Amy Albright that capture the ins and outs of breastfeeding, pumping and babies!

This mama and I have been connected for over 4 years and her 3rd is coming! She lives many states away from me and we’ve never hugged, tho our virtual hugs are BIG!

Being able to know how important ‘sitting on your own hands’ is can make the difference between a women’s independence and confidence and none at all.

If I do my job right, when I leave she can do things by herself after having demonstrated that for me many times as I’ve watched.

People incorrectly assume that you must be in-person to be helpful. Not all Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) have the same skills, training nor experience. Are there some limitations in distance? Of course. And I will always be quick to be transparent about any limitations. But 9/10 times, my training and experience and creativity, we can GET IT SOLVED!

I’m lucky I had the mentor(s) I had, and lucky to have incredible families return to me if they need help. This mama’s next experience will be with an at risk baby, will pose different challenges than she’s had before, she WILL succeed and I will be there for any part she needs me for.

It’s her 3rd baby and the new baby is 1 week old and I’m in her room helping. As she is telling me her stories with her older two, I look over and see her Spectra Baby USA pump with her name on it!

She tells me all about the FABULOUS mother’s room at her work where other moms pumped and also had Spectra breastpumps. So she made sure to personalize hers!!!

So CUTE!

There are countless well documented factors for mothers when not lactating and babies when not receiving breastmilk.

For me, I breastfed my first until 15 months and my next two well into toddlerhood and beyond. It was with my two youngest that I realized what a great parenting tool it was for the emotional toddler phase. It was a quick solve to help them and we would co-regulate together. I remember feeling like I had the best superpower. One day of course we weaned and then I had to become more creative with calming techniques. 😆♥️

When milk supply is low or baby isn’t gaining weight adequately, we naturally want to find the reason WHY and how to FIX it.

There are a multitude of reasons why a supply may be low. This is what an IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant) can work through with you.

The solve is NEVER a quick fix of drink this, take this, eat this, buy this. Does everyone wish there was a quick fix? Of course.

Marketing works. Sadly. And parents are in a very vulnerable postpartum state where they become perfect prey for a company trying to make some $ and get their brand a household name. But that’s all that is.

If you have concerns, work with an IBCLC. She’ll listen and help put the puzzle pieces together.

In the mother/baby world, we have 2 people, 2 different anatomies, 2 health histories, 2 physical bodies. Often we are solving if it’s the chicken or the egg or both; p***e.

Just don’t fall prey to the marketing money machine world.
