10 Common Special Education Need Misinterventions:
(Full article link in comments).

A few impressions after reading: diagnosing the performance issue correctly guides accurate intervention and educational supports. Oftentimes I believe we misdiagnose the casual mechanism/origin of the performance issue itself and fail the student in that regard. Our accurate diagnosis of the issue is the difference between a student feeling smart and capable versus dumb and incompetent at school.

Ask any adult you know, neurodivergent or not: people ALWAYS remember how good they were at academics in school and how their teachers viewed them. Over the years I have met SO many successful entrepreneurs in a variety of fields that say they were the dumb kids in school...? You cant be THAT stupid to be running a successful and profitable business that supports you and your family.....where do you think these people got the idea that they were dumb?

In terms of clinical research: it becomes difficult to measure and quantify behaviors, sensory processing, regulation etc because these skills do not present in isolation in real life. They are dynamic. You cannot isolate the skills very effectively in experiments. It is difficult to find homogenous sample groups when we are considering sample populations like autism and trauma. In these populations we are oftentimes measuring BEHAVIOR, SENSORY, AND REGULATION. that is tough.

Do we stop trying? No, of course not. We do need to try to abide by evidence based practice. As this article shows, a lack of evidence based practice can be HARMFUL to neurodiverse students.

The farther I go in my career in pediatrics and school-based practice, it almost feels like the fewer answers I have. There is so much to think about and consider. What do YOU think? 🧠 πŸ€“ πŸ“–

FIRST WEEK OF HOME VISITS on the summer schedule 🌞

I love everything about the early intervention service model including going into family's homes. It's not for everyone. Yes, you will have awkward moments, smelly moments, uncomfortable moments - people apologizing for their clutter, the animal hair, the chores that are not done yet. Yes, you will see a lot of families live vastly different lives and routines than you. I do love meeting people's pets BUT thats not the main reason I love home visits.

I love supporting the family unit. A child's home and family life set the template for the occupations he or she can participate in. I love helping families work as a unit to increase the child's ability to play, eat, or whatever else their family wants them to do! I also really enjoy supporting the parent - child relationship in terms of attachment and boundary setting βœ”οΈ βœ…οΈ

Children progress quickly during infancy and toddlerhood. Also, it is a rapid time of learning for the guardians about their child's disability and how to optimize his or her play, feeding, etc. We all learn together.

Every family has a different culture that shapes how they function as a family. Every family follows different routines and rituals together. Every early intervention visit is truly unique and I can say I have NEVER been bored πŸ₯³ πŸŽ‰ πŸͺ…

The phrase "Conversations that Matter" comes to mind. Part of my reasoning for researching and producing content on the topic of childhood trauma is to spark Conversations that Matter with different types of people.

I loved that this was a multi generational group - trauma and mental health (culturally) has changed throughout recent decades. Older generations view it differently than younger generations - and yet, we all know or have family members who have endured serious trauma.

Cheers to more learning and discussions in the future πŸ€“ 🧠

Grateful to share my writing journey with patrons at the Mifflin County Library - a spot I frequented as a kid πŸ˜ƒ I am even more grateful for the thought provoking questions and discussion the patrons had. The reason I do this work is to start meaningful conversations that hopefully lead to change over time - a healthier and healed world 🌎 The moderator had to cut our time because we could have kept chatting the way we were for another hour!

P.S. the library is looking for authors and musicians to share their craft for anyone who is interested. Let us celebrate our local writers and artists πŸ₯³

Join me at our very own Mifflin County Library on Tuesday to learn about how I became started as a self-published author, as well as my inspiration for writing to help contribute to a healthier and more loving world πŸ’•

I will be donating a copy of my book to the library as well as offering some for purchase (Cash, Check, or Venmo accepted).

Im extra excited to partake in this event because my mother took me to Mifflin County Library every Saturday for the children's program before I could even speak πŸ“š. Reading new books was one of my favorite activities as a child (and it still is today πŸ€“). In addition to reading on my own, my mother read to me every night for many years, starting with simple Dr. Seuss books all the way through chapter books such as the Boxcar Children, The Magic Treehouse, and Junie B. Jones.

I love books! I love reading! And I love our local library!
