From Rachel:

I am blown away by all that God has done in and through Rooted these last four years.
What started as a dream to offer something no one else was doing: providing child-led, play-based, neurodiversity affirming therapy to autistic children who were gestalt language processors has grown exponentially into a haven for neurodivergent children, teens, and parents!

When Rooted first opened in August of 2022, gestalt language processing therapy was just starting to be implemented in very few therapy centers in Texas. When Rachel become trained in GLP, there were less than 10 GLP-trained speech therapists in the whole state of Texas.

Rachel was passionate about providing therapy to children in a way that honored who they are, how their brain develops language, and how they understand the world.

We have support children, teens, and young adults become their most authentic self, rise to their full potential and grow more into God has called them to be.

I never take Rooted for granted and thank God for each day He continues to let this place exist. I am humbled by our growth and the families we get to be a part of. Becoming one of your child’s favorite people is a blessing and something we all truly cherish.

God has done exceedingly more here than I ever expected and prayed for. Rooted would not be possible without God, our team of therapists, the families we support, and my friends that have cheered me on and encouraged me through the challenges of running a business. So now, we enter another year with expectancy of how God will continue to use Rooted and what this looks like 365 days from now!

I’ve said it from day one and it will always be true, it’s me, Jesus, and my laptop running this company and only through Him is this possible.

A big thank you for all the parents and other therapists who share about Rooted Therapies. You change lives and keep our doors open!

Most people picture Gestalt Language Processing as climbing a staircase—once you reach a stage, you never go back.

That’s not how GLP works.

✨ Language is fluid. A child may communicate using utterances from Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and even Stage 4 within the same conversation.

A Gestalt Language Processor can use language from multiple stages in the same conversation. Their access to language changes based on regulation, cognitive load, sensory needs, and felt safety.

Here’s why:

1. Regulation impacts language access.
When a child is dysregulated, overwhelmed, or emotionally taxed, they may temporarily lose access to higher-level, self-generated language. Their brain automatically reaches for earlier gestalts or echolalic scripts because those language patterns are more readily available and often help support regulation.

✨ 2. Felt safety changes communication.
Many GLPs use more flexible language with people they trust and return to earlier-stage language with unfamiliar adults, peers, or in environments where they don’t yet feel safe. This doesn’t mean they’ve “lost” language—it reflects how closely communication is connected to nervous system regulation.

✨ 3. Cognitive demands matter.
Learning something new, navigating conflict, experiencing a loss of autonomy, transitioning between activities, or simply being exhausted can all reduce access to later-stage language. Earlier gestalts may become the easiest and most efficient way for the brain to communicate.

✨ 4. New language often begins as a gestalt.
When GLPs acquire new language, they frequently repeat it as a whole script first (Stage 1). As their brain processes that gestalt, it becomes more flexible and can eventually be mixed, mitigated, and self-generated into later stages.

✨ 5. Language development isn’t equal across all communication functions.
A child may be using later-stage language for requesting but still rely on Stage 1 or Stage 2 gestalts for protesting, commenting, asking questions, or expressing emotions. That’s why we model language based on the communication function being developed—not simply the child’s “overall stage.”

“The difference was obvious.”

That’s what we hear from families every week.

Parents tell us their child is communicating more, engaging more, regulating more, and making progress they weren’t seeing before.

Here’s why Rooted is different:

🌱 We specialize in Gestalt Language Processing (GLP). We don’t try to make every child fit a traditional speech model. We support language development in a way that matches how many autistic children naturally acquire language.

🧸 We are child-led, play-based, and connection-focused. Real learning happens through trust, joy, and meaningful relationships—not compliance.

🩵 We are neurodiversity-affirming. We don’t try to change who your child is. We help them communicate, participate, and thrive while honoring their unique brain.

🌈 We prioritize sensory regulation first. A dysregulated nervous system can’t access learning. Before speech goals, handwriting, or fine motor skills, we help children feel safe enough to engage.

✨ Most importantly, we believe autistic children are smart, capable, and worthy of being understood. We presume competence and build therapy around their strengths—not their deficits.

The goal isn’t to create a child who looks neurotypical.

The goal is to help your child feel understood, empowered, and confident to communicate in their own way.

If you’ve been told your child “isn’t ready,” “has too many behaviors,” or you’ve felt like therapy wasn’t the right fit, we’d love to show you what therapy can look like when it’s built around your child—not the other way around.

✨ ADHD isn’t a behavior problem. It’s a different way of processing the world.

Children with ADHD aren’t choosing to forget, fidget, interrupt, or struggle to get started. Their brains are working hard to manage attention, regulate emotions, organize information, and shift between tasks—all while navigating environments that often aren’t designed for them.

At Rooted & Rising Therapies, we don’t focus on “fixing” ADHD. We focus on understanding it.

Through play-based, neurodiversity-affirming occupational and speech therapy, we help children:
✨Build executive functioning skills through meaningful activities
✨Develop regulation strategies that actually work for their unique nervous system
✨ Strengthen communication and self-advocacy
✨ Support attention and participation without relying on compliance
💛 Build confidence by honoring who they are—not masking it.

When we stop asking, “Why won’t they?” and start asking, “What support do they need?” everything changes.

The three main reasons autistic kids start communicating exponentially faster at Rooted Therapies are:

1. We understand and specialize in the way autistic children develop language.
- We know that autistic kids that use echolalia/scripting, who repeat things they hear but aren’t conversational are gestalt language processors.
- We support them as GLPs and help them develop through the stages of language development all the way to conversational speech.

2. Our approach: we are child-led and play-based.
- We enter the child’s world, their play idea, and we embed communication and language into that.
- We are NOT sitting at the table doing flashcards, worksheets, or quizzing them.

3. We understand nervous system regulation. We believe in connection and relationship-based care where the child feels safe, known and loved. We help their bodies achieve sensory regulation and we work closely with our occupational therapists at Rooted.

If you’re a parent of autistic children and you’ve been in speech therapy with little or slow progress. Consider this your sign to find a speech therapist who is neurodiversity affirming, child-led, play-based, and specializes in gestalt language processing

We are so excited to welcome Chloe back to Rooted!!

Rooted families had the pleasure of meeting Chloe last summer, while she was fulfilling a graduate school clinical placement at Rooted. She worked alongside Rachel and quickly became a natural with supporting our neurodivergent kids and gestalt language processors.

Chloe has been a full-time school-based SLPA for the last three years and brings valuable insight on IEPs and the school system.

We can’t wait for her to start on August 3rd! Call to get on Chloe’s schedule. You and your family will LOVE her! She will be at Rooted on Mondays and Wednesday.

✨ Occupational therapy looks different at Rooted Therapies… because neurodivergent children deserve something different. 💛

We don’t believe children need to earn play, suppress who they are, or become “more compliant” to make progress.

Instead, our occupational therapy is designed around how autistic children, children with ADHD, and gestalt language processors naturally learn best.

🌿 Child-led, play-based sessions
🌿 Regulation before expectations
🌿 Sensory supports woven into every session
🌿 Strength-based goals that build independence
🌿 Collaboration with our speech therapists who specialize in Gestalt Language Processing (NLA)
🌿 A space where stimming, movement, AAC, echolalia, and unique communication styles are respected and celebrated

For gestalt language processors, communication and regulation are deeply connected. That’s why our OT doesn’t just work on fine motor skills—it supports sensory processing, executive functioning, emotional regulation, body awareness, motor planning, and the foundations that make communication and learning possible.

At Rooted, we meet your child exactly where they are. We follow their interests, honor their nervous system, and build skills through connection—not compliance.

Because when children feel safe, understood, and accepted, that’s when the most meaningful growth happens. 🌱

If you’ve been looking for occupational therapy that truly understands neurodivergent children, we’d love to welcome your family.

🔍Modeling single words in Stages 1-2
GLPs don’t learn language one word at a time. They learn through meaningful chunks and scripts. When we focus on single words or individual sounds too early, we can unintentionally keep them stuck in earlier stages instead of supporting natural language development.

🔍Compliance-based therapy
“Work first, then play.”
“Earn your reward.”
When children are focused on meeting demands, their nervous system is often focused on survival, not learning. Connection, safety, and intrinsic motivation create better conditions for communication growth.

🔍Limiting access to favorite shows and songs
Many gestalt language processors acquire language through media. Scripts from shows, songs, and videos can become meaningful gestalts that later develop into flexible language.

🔍Flashcards
GLPs learn best through real experiences, play, relationships, and meaningful contexts. Flashcards often lead to memorization rather than functional communication that transfers into everyday life.

🔍Constant reminders for a “calm body,” “listening body,” or “safe hands”
Many GLPs are neurodivergent and have unique sensory needs. When a child is using all of their energy to sit still, stay quiet, or look a certain way, there is less capacity available for learning and communication.

🔍Missing signs of apraxia
Some GLPs also have childhood apraxia of speech. Their brain knows what they want to say, but coordinating the movements to produce speech is difficult. This can impact intelligibility, verbal output, and how we support communication.

🔍No access to AAC
AAC is not a last resort. Many gestalt language processors benefit from AAC alongside spoken language. AAC can support language development, reduce frustration, and provide another way to communicate.

🔍Being over-therapied
Therapy should support a child’s development—not exhaust them. Neurodivergent children have learning batteries and social batteries, too. Sometimes more therapy isn’t the answer. Finding the “just right” balance can make all the difference.
