Modern witchcraft is filled with ancient names, inherited symbols, folk customs, literary legends, occult reinventions, and newly created traditions. But which practices are truly ancient, which emerged from folklore, and which were shaped by modern witches?

In this history-centered class on Sunday, Sept. 5th, Sebastian guides participants through the winding development of witchcraft from folk belief and historical accusation to occult revival, modern Paganism, and contemporary spiritual practice. Participants will learn how ideas surrounding the Moon, candles, divination, sacred spaces, spirits, and magical correspondences have changed as they moved between cultures and generations.

Rather than searching for one unbroken history of witchcraft, the class introduces a historian’s approach to magical tradition. Participants will explore the differences between historical evidence, folklore, literary invention, occult reconstruction, modern reclamation, and personal spiritual experience.

The class concludes with a practical exercise in which each participant selects a familiar magical practice, symbol, or tool and traces how it may have traveled from history into modern witchcraft. Participants will then consider how to incorporate it into their own practice with greater knowledge, intention, and respect.
