Earlier this week, Laura Becker, our Perinatal Health Hub Program Manager, and Rachel Dumene with the Central Shenandoah Health District (CSHD) joined WDBJ’s Natalie Faunce to talk about care for moms and babies before and after birth, and safe sleep habits.

They shared how Strong Starts supports families with:

✅ Lactation support
✅ Mental health support
✅ Safe sleep education and cribettes

Our free support groups meet Tuesdays at 10 a.m. All families are welcome. 💚

Last week, we celebrated the dedicated medical assistants who make every patient visit at Rockbridge Area Health Center possible.

Before the first patient steps through the door, our MAs are already at work — stocking exam rooms, checking equipment, and sanitizing every space so patients receive safe, high-quality care. When patients arrive, it's our MAs who greet them, take their vitals, and make them feel at ease before they see their provider.

They are the backbone of our care team, and we are grateful for them every single day.

Halloween Safety Basics
Halloween is almost here! 🎃
Trick-or-treating is so much fun. A few small steps keep it safe.

✅ Know where your kids are going. Walk with them, or know their route.
✅ Check all the candy before they eat it. Toss anything that’s open or not wrapped.
✅ Watch for allergies and choking risks, especially with little ones.
✅ Brush after the candy! Two minutes helps wash the sugar away.

Saturday, October 24, is Prescription Drug Take Back Day. 💙

Take a few minutes to check your medicine cabinet. Look at expiration dates and refills, and make it a regular habit. Anything expired, unused, or no longer needed can go to a drop-off site near you.

Please don’t flush medicine down the toilet. Drop-off is the safest way to protect your family, your neighbors, and our local water.

1 in 4 women over 65 in Rockbridge is overdue. Let’s close the gap. 💚

When should you be screened? It’s different for every woman. That’s why we want you to ask.

Early screening is important. It is even more important if you are at higher risk for breast cancer.

Too many women in our community are behind on their mammograms. RAHC is working to close that gap and get more women in.

Not a RAHC patient? Or worried about cost? There is another option. Every Woman’s Life is a public health program that offers free breast cancer screenings to women who qualify. It is for women who are uninsured and have a low income. To qualify, you must live in Virginia, be 18 to 64, and meet the income rules. Women 18 to 39 must have symptoms or be at high risk.

At your next women’s wellness visit, ask your provider:
✅ Do I know my family history of cancer?
✅ Am I at higher risk?
✅ Do I qualify for free screening?

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

To every parent, grandparent, sibling, and friend in Rockbridge who has lost a baby: we see you. We remember with you.

Some losses happen early. Some happen late. Some happen after a baby is born. Every one is real. Every one matters.

Your grief does not have a deadline. There is no right way to carry it.
