In July we celebrate Ed Roberts, the activist who refused to accept that people with disabilities should be shut away. After being denied admission to college because administrators said he was "too disabled," he fought his way in, became a leader, and co-founded the Center for Independent Living. His vision that people with disabilities should control their own lives became the backbone of the independent living movement and helped pave the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). His legacy lives on every time a ramp, a curb cut, or an accessible door makes the world a little more accessible.

Thirty-six years ago, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. A landmark civil rights victory prohibiting discrimination based on disability in employment, public services, and daily life. Born from years of advocacy, including the powerful 1990 "Capitol Crawl" where activists ascended the Capitol steps to spotlight physical barriers, the ADA transformed public spaces and societal expectations nationwide.

Today, we celebrate that legacy and recommit to the principle that access, dignity, and equal opportunity belongs to everyone.

Today we spotlight Justin Dart Jr., a tireless advocate whose work reshaped the disability rights movement in America. Often called the "father of the ADA," Dart crossed the country listening to thousands of people with disabilities, collecting their stories of injustice, and turning those voices into action.

His relentless advocacy was instrumental in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 a landmark civil rights legislation that opened doors, broke down barriers, and affirmed dignity and access for millions.

Here at Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. d.b.a Mainstream, we're grateful for the world he helped build and are committed to continuing that work.

This year marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A defining moment that set forth the enduring ideals of liberty, equality, self-governance, and justice. July 4th offers a chance to reflect on the legacy of the nation’s founders and what it continues to mean for us today.

Please note that our office will be closed this Friday, July 3, 2026 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. We will reopen on Monday, July 6, 2026 at 8 a.m. Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful holiday weekend.❤️🤍💙

This Cataract Awareness Month 👁️👁️, we’re shining a light on the importance of healthy vision. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

🤍Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, affecting more than 94 million people and nearly half of adults by age 75

🤍Cataracts often develop slowly. Early symptoms like cloudy vision or glare are often overlooked

🤍UV exposure increases cataract risk. Wearing UV‑blocking sunglasses can reduce that risk by up to 20–25%

June is PTSD Awareness month, and PTSD Awareness day is June 27th. PTSD Awareness Day was established on June 27, 2010, in honor of Staff Sergeant Joe Biel. During the month of June, it is the goal to educate the public about PTSD, reduce stigma, and highlight evidence-based treatments that improve quality of life for those affected. Approximately 12 million adults in the U.S. experience PTSD in a given year, and about 6% of the population will have PTSD at some point in their lives. Let's take some time during this month to promote understanding and support for those affected.🩵
