My dad passed away on September 26th. My sister and I were there, holding his hands.
He spent a month in the ICU fighting for his life. I was there every day, as his advocate, as part of his care team, and as his daughter. Some days I didn’t know which one I was. Most days I was all three.
He was born in Honolulu and never lost his aloha. Air Force veteran, engineer, fisherman, gardener. Married to my mom for 44 years. And Papa to his grandkids, the title he loved most.
I talk to women every day about carrying too much in midlife. This season, I lived it. ICU mornings, school pickups, patients, and grief on top of a body that is already changing.
And you carried us. You carried me. The meals at our door, the friends who picked up my kids, the flowers, the texts that just said “thinking of you.” Thank you. I felt every bit of it.
If you’re in a heavy season right now, let someone help. You don’t have to hold it all alone.
A hui hou, Dad. 🤍
