Los Alamos Medical Center is proud to announce that Julia Kilcer, RN, Clinical Educator, has been recognized as our hospital’s 2026 Mercy Award winner. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of Lifepoint Health’s facilities who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded. The award is considered the highest honor a Lifepoint employee can receive.

Julia has been the Clinical Educator at LAMC since August 2024, and while she shines brightly in that role, she is equally known across the hospital for her selfless willingness to do whatever it takes to put patients first and deliver excellent care. Her approachability and expertise make her the hospital’s “go-to” for clinical, procedural, and policy questions. She is both patient and kind, endearing her to all staff across varying skill levels.

“In her time at our hospital, Julia has been an exemplary role model and exhibits all of our core values in her role through her skills, kindness, compassion and positive attitude,” said Bob Singletary, LAMC interim chief executive officer. “I cannot say enough about Julia’s many contributions to our facility and community – including during those unseen times on nights and weekends. She is truly deserving of this prestigious honor.”

“Julia puts the facility, patients and community first, before her own personal needs,” a colleague’s award recommendation letter reads. “She takes her role as a nurse extremely seriously, and goes back to the foundation of nursing, ‘Care for those in need.’”

Congratulations, Julia!

We are very pleased to announce that Michael H. Covert, FACHE, has been appointed chief executive officer of Los Alamos Medical Center, effective June 15. Covert will replace Bob Singletary, who has been serving as our interim CEO since March.

Covert brings decades of healthcare leadership experience with a strong focus on community access, quality of care, and collaboration with physicians, caregivers, and local partners. He has led hospitals and health systems across the country, helping organizations grow services, strengthen operations and quality, and meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

Covert recently served as chief operations officer at Northeast Georgia Health System, where he supported day-to-day operations for a five-hospital system, expanded key clinical service lines, and improved care coordination and patient flow. His career also includes senior leadership roles at CHI St. Luke’s Health System in Texas, Palomar Health in California, Washington Hospital Center, and Sarasota Memorial Health System.

“Michael is a seasoned healthcare leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to patients, caregivers, physicians, and the communities his hospitals have served,” said Linda Daly, chair of the LAMC Board of Trustees.” We are confident his experience and operational acumen will help Los Alamos Medical Center continue to meet our community’s needs today and into the future.”

Covert holds a Master of Health Administration from Washington University School of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Washington University School of Business in St. Louis, Missouri, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Fernando Garcia knows that pride, hard work, heart, and an infectious attitude go a long way in life. And it’s paying dividends in more ways than one.

Fernando is thrilled to share that the Santa Fe Indian School boys basketball team he helps coach and has invested so much in has landed on a national stage. The Braves were recently invited to compete in the national Section 7 Native Qualifiers basketball tournament in Mesa, Ariz., scheduled for June 9-11. Only 16 Native American high school teams in the entire country are invited to play in this the prestigious tournament.

“It means the world to me to see my boys get the opportunity and recognition that they deserve,” Fernando said.

In addition to enjoying such a historically momentous season on the court, Fernando also recently celebrated his promotion to LAMC’s Director of Nutrition Services. He takes great pride in adding position that to his existing title of Executive Chef.

“I love how my job allows me to be me and it shows in my cooking. I also love interacting with patients, co-workers, and the community,” the native of Española said.

Way to go, Fernando!
