USC Department of Neurosurgery We aim to combine compassionate care with state-of-the-art techniques to provide the finest neurosurgical services to patients.

The Department of Neurological Surgery is composed of 20 eminent, full-time clinician-scientists who are dedicated to patient care, scholarly activities and education of neurosurgical residents and fellows. Many of our faculty members hold national and international leadership roles. We also feature numerous faculty with dual appointments at USC, and a cohort of exceptional staff researchers.

--Our department, established in 1919, was the first organized neurosurgical service west of the Mississippi and featured the first neurosurgical training program on the West Coast, launched in 1927.
--Our department was instrumental in developing the skull-based neurosurgery subspecialty, starting in the 1980s.
--We were the first neurosurgical department to include full-time radiologists on our faculty to deliver neuro-endovascular care, beginning in 1994, and we have continued to make substantial contributions to radiosurgery.
--Four of our faculty members have been named among “America’s Best Doctors.”
--Two of our faculty members serve as editors of prestigious, international journals of neurosurgery.
--The department’s clinical volume, in excess of 3,000 cases, ranks as one of the five largest programs in the United States.

As we begin the summer, USC Neurosurgery is proud to celebrate the continued accomplishments of our department. Congratulations to the USC Neurosurgery Residency Class of 2026, whose hard work, professionalism, and dedication were honored as they begin the next chapter of their careers. We also congratulate Drs. Steven Giannotta and Thomas Chen on receiving the Excellence in Training/Mentoring Award for their outstanding commitment to educating and supporting our residents.

We were proud to celebrate Arthur Shao, Ph.D., whose doctoral research under the mentorship of Dr. Brian Lee advances the fields of neuroengineering and brain-computer interfaces, and to host our 9th Annual USC Neurosurgery Resident Research Day, highlighting resident-led research across clinical and translational neuroscience. Congratulations as well to Dr. Michelle Lin and Dr. Benjamin Hopkins, recipients of the Michael L. J. Apuzzo Prize for Creativity and Innovation, and thank you to Dr. Langston T. Holly for joining us as keynote speaker.

Together, these milestones reflect USC Neurosurgery’s commitment to education, mentorship, research, innovation, collaboration, and exceptional patient care.

Hsieh’s recognition as one of LA’s Top Doctors 2026, to groundbreaking advances in brain-computer interfaces and AI-driven memory research led by Drs. Charles Liu and D**g Song, our team is helping shape the future of neurosurgery.

We’re also excited to announce our upcoming Epilepsy: State of the Art and Future Directions conference on May 16, bringing healthcare professionals together to explore the future of epilepsy care and emerging therapies.
