How do you talk to children about a parent’s addiction?
Navigating this conversation is incredibly tough, but open communication is vital for a child’s healing and development. Here is how to approach it:
Keep it age appropriate: Younger kids need simple, concrete explanations. Try talking while doing an activity together, like coloring or building blocks, to make them feel safe.
Explain it as an illness: Teach them that addiction is a chronic brain disease-not a choice.
Frame it as a sickness that the parent is working to get better from, but reassure them it isn’t
“catchy” like a cold.
Release the blame: Children often secretly blame themselves. Use the “Seven C’s” concept to remind them: They didn’t Cause it, they can’t Cure it, and they can’t Control it.
Create a safe space: Encourage them to voice their emotions-anger, sadness, or worry. Let them know it is perfectly okay to talk about what is happening.
Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers. Saying “I don’t know, but I’ll find out” is completely okay.
